THE WEEK’S US BORDER NEWS NEWSLETTER:
This week’s U.S. border security and immigration news was dominated by the expansion of aggressive, high-profile federal enforcement operations into Southern US cities and the ongoing expansion of the Border Wall.
Key Developments:
Nationwide Enforcement Operations: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is conducting a multi-city “mass deportation” campaign:
Photo by Nicole Herrero on Unsplash Federal agents began staging for a new two-month operation, “Operation Swamp Sweep,” in southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, aiming for approximately 5,000 arrests in the coming weeks.
“Operation Charlotte’s Web” in North Carolina has resulted in hundreds of arrests. Local law enforcement initially suggested the operation was ending, but a DHS official insisted it was ongoing and “not ending anytime soon”. The operation created a “chilling effect” in immigrant neighborhoods, with reports of school attendance dropping and businesses closing temporarily.
Previously, agents had operated in cities like Chicago and Portland.
Legal Rulings:
The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay on a federal judge’s order that would have restricted immigration agents’ use of riot control weapons against protesters, clergy, and journalists.
The Supreme Court agreed to a Trump administration request to review lower court injunctions against the “metering” policy, which limits the number of asylum seekers who can enter at ports of entry.
DHS Action:
Border Wall Construction: The DHS announced a determination of waiver for legal requirements to construct additional border barriers and roads in the Del Rio and Tucson sectors of Texas and Arizona, respectively. This comes as construction ramps up on other sections of the border wall, such as near Laredo.
Enforcement Data:
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico reported that in the week ending November 21, 2025, it brought criminal charges against 152 individuals for illegal reentry, alien smuggling, and illegal entry, some of which occurred within a newly established National Defense Area.
