Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called for the District Attorneys and Sheriffs of Dallas and Collin Counties to investigate “Sharia Courts” in North Texas, along with the Texas Attorney General and Texas Department of Public Safety, in a letter he sent to all four agencies.
The Governor explained his reasoning in the letter as well as in a post on x.com about the “alleged Sharia courts operating in Texas” :
“These tribunals have no legal authority in our state. Only Texas laws enforced by Texas courts govern our people.” -Texas Governor Greg Abbott-Texas Governor Greg Abbott
The call for these investigations by Governor Abbott are the latest in a series of concerns he has expressed about Islamic organizations in Texas:
In September, Governor Abbott complained about so-called “Sharia Patrols” in Houston.
And, earlier this week, Governor Abbott designated the Muslim Brotherhood and Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as “foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations” which he says “bans them from buying or acquiring land in Texas and authorizes the Attorney General to sue to shut them down.”
In response, CAIR has sent Abbott a letter denouncing his “defamatory proclamation” and threatening a legal challenge. They also called said the “Sharia Courts” Abbott wants investigated “imaginary.”
“Now, the day after issuing an unconstitutional and error-riddled proclamation targeting the state’s largest Muslim civil rights group, he is ordering Texas distract attorneys to investigate imaginary ‘sharia courts.’ -CAIR Statement
If this dust-up over North Texas “Sharia Courts” sounds familiar, Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Bud Kennedy pointed out the reason for that in a post to x.com.
Eight years ago, Beth Van Duyne sounded the alarm about them as mayor of the Dallas suburb of Irving:
The publicity generated by her campaign against “Sharia Courts” in her city helped her win a seat in Congress.
Are you concerned about the enforcement of “Sharia Law” in the United States?
