With a change in US Presidential administrations looming, this week’s US Border News Weekly Newsletter (our second) begins with a summary of where things now stand on the Southern Border ahead of whatever new policies President-elect Trump puts in place:
Border Crossings and Apprehensions
Illegal border crossings have decreased significantly in 2024 compared to previous years:
Border Patrol apprehensions dropped 25% from fiscal year 2023 to 2024, from over 2 million to about 1.5 million.
September 2024 saw the lowest number of illegal crossings of the Biden administration, with around 54,000 apprehensions.
Overall, illegal crossings have decreased by 78% since December 2023.
Causes of Decreased Migration
Several factors contributed to the reduction in illegal border crossings:
Mexico increased enforcement within its borders starting in January 2024.
The Biden administration implemented new asylum restrictions in June 2024.
CBP increased legal entry appointments through the CBP One app to 1,450 per day.
Border Security Measures
Texas has ramped up border security efforts under Operation Lone Star:
Over 525,800 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 48,500 criminal arrests have been made.
Texas claims to have decreased illegal crossings into the state by over 86%..
The Texas National Guard is conducting mass migration response exercises..
Political and Policy Developments
The Biden administration's asylum restrictions are likely to remain in place indefinitely.
Texas has spent $11 billion on Operation Lone Star since 2021.
Humanitarian Concerns
While overall southwest border deaths decreased by 30% in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024, Border Patrol still recovered the remains of 560 migrants during the year.
