Immigration and Border Security developments during the week of August 22–29, 2026, include the Trump Administration’s plans for the largest single mass revocation of visas in US history; a judge blocking planned deportations of non-citizens for opposing US foreign policy; and the arrest and deportation of British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos from New Orleans.
Visa Actions
Visa Revocations for Asylum Seekers: The Associated Press reports that the Trump administration is preparing to revoke the business and tourism visas of up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are currently seeking asylum status in the United States. If it happens, the move would be the largest single mass revocation of visas in U.S. history and would likely face legal challenges.
Visa Appointment Pause: The Christian Science Monitor on Wednesday reported that the U.S. State Department has paused immigrant visa appointments abroad to conduct in-depth training for consular officers regarding new “public charge” screening standards. However, on Friday, Courthouse News Service reported a federal judge blocked that move.
Key Court Decisions
No Deportations based on “Political Speech”: A federal judge on Friday declared that the Trump administration’s efforts to deport noncitizens for political speech (which were generally being applied to those supporting Palestinian causes) run counter to the Constitution’s First and Fifth Amendments, the latest legal rebuke of the White House’s expansive immigration agenda.
Big Bend Wall Construction Pause Extended: Also on Friday, a federal judge in San Antonio extended a temporary pause on ground-disturbing border wall construction in the Big Bend National Park region until mid-September.
Immigration Enforcement
Deportations and Criminal Charges: The Department of Homeland Security reported its ongoing operations to deport noncitizens with criminal convictions, while federal prosecutors in Texas charged hundreds of individuals for illegal entry and felony reentry.
Milo Yiannopoulos Deported: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos in New Orleans and returned him to the United Kingdom on Thursday after his authorization to be in the US expired, and he did not appear at an immigration hearing.
