THE WEEK’S US BORDER NEWS IN BRIEF:
This week's U.S. border and immigration news focuses heavily on escalated enforcement in Minneapolis, as well as the fatal shooting of a civilian by an ICE agent there, while other news includes the expansion of a Rio Grande buoy barrier and fallout from the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Key Developments:
Minneapolis Crackdown: DHS Secretary Noem is sending hundreds more ICE agents to Minneapolis for what officials call the “largest immigration operation ever,” targeting alleged fraud in Somali-run daycare centers, and faces protests following the fatal shooting of a woman (Renee Good) by an ICE agent, which is under FBI investigation.
Anti-Fraud Initiatives: USCIS has also launched major fraud investigations in Minnesota, which also target the Somali community there.
“River Wall” expansion: The Trump Administration is adding hundreds of miles of “river wall,” (a line of buoys in the Rio Grande), expanding barriers the State of Texas installed as part of “Operation Lone Star”.
TPS/Parole Status: There is confusion within the Venezuelan community about eligibility for refugee status following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by US forces in Caracas.
