THE WEEK’S US BORDER NEWS IN BRIEF:

Where Did All The Fentanyl Go?:
The Washington Post reports “fentanyl seizures are plummeting” at the US Southern Border with Mexico. Monthly seizures in 2025 are half of what they were in 2024. A war between rival factions within the Sinaloa Cartel, which the Post says is the “main producer” of the opioid, may be one of the reasons for that. Another: China has cracked down on exports of chemicals that the cartels use to produce the drug.
Supreme Court Victory for Trump Administration:
The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Trump administration to revoke the temporary legal status of more than 500,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela granted by the Biden administration, making them subject to deportation. They can stay by applying for asylum, which lawyers predict many will do.
Migrant Arrested for Threatening President May Have Been Set Up:
A man accused by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, Kristi Noem, of threatening to assassinate President Trump may have been framed by someone accused of previously attacking him, according to CNN. Investigators suspect the goal was to deport the man to prevent him from testifying in an upcoming trial.
Top Trump Staffer Demands ICE Immediately Triple Number of Arrests:
Axios reports that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller yelled at ICE officials during a recent meeting and demanded triple the number of daily arrests (to at least 3,000), leading some to fear “their jobs could be in jeopardy if the new targets aren't reached,” sources said.
DHS Releases List of US “Sanctuary” Cities & Counties:
A list of US cities and counties the Trump Administration has identified as “sanctuary jurisdictions defying federal immigration law” and that “endanger the lives of Americans and law enforcement,” resulted in immediate push-back by some who made the list. Among them: Huntington Beach, California, whose City Council has unanimously declared the city to be “a non-sanctuary city for illegal immigration,” according to the New York Times.
UPDATE: The link to the list of “sanctuary jurisdictions” on the DHS website is no longer active.
