Since we are talking about failed states, that are not even trying to keep their own people safe, I'm not unsympathetic. We are at war, because they have been waging war on us for years by unconventional means.

I can reasonably make an argument on Venezuela being a "failed state" based on their last election; Colombia, a little less so.

The challenge is, what do you do after you oust a "failed state" government?

Owing to the concept of "you broke it, you own it," it is much easier to depose an incompetent government than to stand up another one --- and then to take responsibility for establishing a new (hopefully, eventually competent) inexperienced government, in the face of what is almost surely to be opposition from those who supported the former government, no matter how corrupt it was vs whatever you hope to replace it with.

Wouldn't Venezuela be nicer with Maria Machado behind the podium? She did win the election, after all. And a Nobel peace prize...
