THE WEEK’S US BORDER NEWS IN BRIEF:
Border Security and Immigration News during the week of September 26 to October 4, 2026 includes President Trump clawing back millions in programs and grants earmarked for migrants, revoking more than a quarter million visas, and a large number of immigration criminal charges filed by Arizona federal prosecutors.
$810 Million "Pocket Rescission": On October 1, the White House initiated an $810 million pocket rescission to cancel millions of dollars in federal funding previously allocated to public service programs and grants for undocumented immigrants and foreign nationals. The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) and a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers—including Senators Susan Collins and Patty Murray—have condemned the pocket rescission as an illegal violation of federal law, equating it to an unconstitutional line-item veto.
Mass Visa Revocations: Coinciding with the start of the new fiscal year on October 1, the State Department confirmed it has revoked over 250,000 visas due to stricter screening protocols, fraud, and national security concerns. This came alongside the expansion of mandatory online social media screening for foreign applicants.
Arizona Immigration Crackdown: The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona announced criminal charges against 374 individuals for immigration-related offenses—such as illegal re-entry and human smuggling—in just a single week of enforcement operations ending October 2.
Massive Deportation Hub Expansion: On October 1, The New York Times detailed a major expansion of the administration’s busiest deportation hub in Alexandria, Louisiana, introducing a new facility designed to hold and accelerate the removal of immigrant families and children.
