The prioritizing of criminals is the correct approach. Folks who have been here for 20 years are not high priority, but ultimately they all need to leave, preferably voluntarily, and apply to come back with visas.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply & thank you for reading US Border News!
I'll just add that while I support your position, there's a problem with expecting longtime non-criminal workers to temporarily depart, then return to the US with visas, because that's not an option under current conditions.
In the 40's - during WWII - in response to a critical shortage of Ag workers, the US implemented a "Bracero" program which allowed Mexican workers to fill those jobs legally. The program continued until the mid-60s, and - honestly, it's been a bit of a sh*tshow ever since it ended.
The "Bracero" program was far from perfect, but its much better than where we are now.
I just have to chime in here. I live in Mexico. I can't do anything here. Not buy a home, open a bank acct. Get health insurance. Why? Bcuz I am not a citizen. So I became a dual citizen. Why does our country allow illegal immigrants to live as if they r citizens? The church i attend here, is filled with deported people. Most had criminal records, but there is one lady I so sympathize with. She got married to an american citizen, had 4 children born in LA area. Was working on her immigration papers when they told her to go to a city in Mexico by the border n they nvr let her back in. 3 yrs later, 1 daughter graduated from jr. High, another from high school n her husband is mom n dad, while she waits to be pardoned. Now, I am not saying she is not at fault. But why was she allowed to make a life in the US in the 1st place? Cases like hers abound. I blame our immigration laws. If ur going to allow people to make a life in the US then give them a path to citizenship.
Thanks for sharing your viewpoints from Mexico! Our immigration laws are a mess, quite frankly, and contribute to people concluding there's no way to come here legally, so they just cross. The bipartisan bill passed in the House would have gone a long way toward fixing that, but it became a casualty of the last presidential election.
I wouldn't call it an about face, it's been known for years that farms and businesses take advantage of illegal immigrants because they can be paid a low wage due to minimum wage not applying. They should be removed from the country. There is a temporary visa system for migrant farmers/workers so the criminals can be vetted out.
The American Farm Bureau Federation says "the costs and administrative burdens associated with the (H-2A Visas) program weaken the practicality of utilizing the program for many farmers. While these costs must be borne in the short run, they change the economics of farming, and risk making many American farmers uncompetitive with imports from low-wage countries."
Maybe for the long timers we could offer a process in country to give citizenship asking as they have not committed any serious offenses, instead of going to an embassy in their home country.
Also it used to be that if you could prove in country 7 years and homesteaded or working contributing to society in good standing, you could appy for citizenship through the courts. Does that still apply, or has it been changed?
The most common path to U.S. citizenship through naturalization is being a lawful permanent resident (LPR ie "Green Card Holder") for at least five years. However, many farm workers did not come to the US legally and do not qualify for a green card.
Yeah, agreed. Maybe we could have these businesses that have taken advantage of cheap illegal migrant labor aid (monetary or otherwise) a path to citizenship for the longtimers. After all they're such great workers they would deserve it.
No. Deport them all. Especially if in u.s. illegally. Take care of America and Americans first - our veterans, our senior citizens, our disabled, our homeless, our poor. And NO amnesty at all. Plenty in Trump admin are pro amnesty. NO. My great grandfather came here legally. He wasn't allowed ANY short cuts. PLUS HE HAD TO LEARN ENGLISH!!!

Bypassing the legal migration system is a crime in itself.
