San Diego Feds Seize $17M From Cartel Smugglers
Drug Runners vs CBP Officers
US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Agents in San Diego continue to make life hard for cartel drug smugglers. In May, its agents there seized 7,854 pounds of drugs worth more than $17 million. CBP Officers seized 6,298 pounds of methamphetamine, 1,267 pounds of cocaine, 256 pounds of fentanyl, and 33 pounds of heroin while interrupting 115 smuggling attempts during the month.
One major seizure occurred on May 29, 2025, at the Calexico East Cargo Facility, where more than 100 packages of cocaine weighing in at 245.28 pounds were found hidden inside a tractor-trailer's air tanks.
Another notable seizure occurred on May 19, 2025, when Border Patrol Agents assigned to the San Clemente Station stopped a suspicious vehicle along the I-5 freeway near the Basilone Road exit. After a K9 showed interest in the car, a search led to the discovery of 25 packages containing 66.14 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of approximately $451,500.
The May seizures followed an even bigger month of drug seizures by San Diego Sector CBP Officers in April of 2025. During that month, they seized over 7,000 pounds of narcotics worth $29 million. While interrupting more than 105 cartel smuggling attempts, they seized:
4,000 pounds of meth
2,000 pounds of cocaine
400 pounds of fentanyl
5 pounds of heroin
Meanwhile, the San Diego Sector's streak of big busts continues this month. On June 4, 2025, CBP Officers intercepted 104 pounds of elaborately concealed cocaine during a vehicle stop on Interstate 15. A K9 alert led agents to uncover a hidden compartment in an SUV's roof covered by a motorized panel.
After literally "raising the roof," Border Patrol Agents discovered forty bundles that contained $708,000 worth of cocaine.
