Million-Dollar Drug Busts Along Texas Border
Federal Agents are taking a bite out of cartel smuggling profits along the Rio Grande.
Federal officers along the Texas Border with Mexico continue to make large-scale drug busts - a string of noteworthy drug seizures that began late last month.
The latest reported bust occurred Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025, on the Camino Real International Bridge in Eagle Pass. US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Agents discovered 42 packages containing more than 108 pounds of cocaine hidden within a tractor-trailer truck crossing into the US from Piedras Negras. This drug load is estimated to be worth more than 1.4 million dollars.

The bust followed an even larger seizure that occurred Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, on the Pharr International Bridge. CBP Officers there discovered 8,206 packages of methamphetamine and 26 packages of heroin mixed among a shipment of cucumbers and jalapeños. The meth weighed 2,217.85 pounds - a drug load weighing more than a ton and worth more than 19-and-a-half million dollars. The almost eight-pound load of heroin had a street value of more than 144 thousand dollars.

On the same day, CBP Officers at another South Texas crossing point foiled another large-scale smuggling attempt by one of the Mexican cartels. CBP Officers on the Roma International Bridge inspecting a semi-truck loaded with soft drinks found it was also hauling coke (the drug kind, not the soft drink).
The human and K9 CBP officers sniffed out 120 pounds of cocaine in 50 packages hidden within the drink shipment. That drug load was worth 1.6 million dollars.

This recent series of large border busts began on Jan. 24, 2025, when CBP Agents on Laredo's World Trade Bridge discovered nearly 890 pounds of meth worth 8.1 million dollars while inspecting a semi-truck loaded with industrial equipment.

Border Patrol Agents in Rio Grande City, Texas, also reported some large marijuana seizure. The largest bust netted agents 417 pounds of marijuana valued at over 334 thousand dollars on Jan. 29, 2025.

Earlier, smugglers hauing a 130-pound load of pot led agents on a high-speed chase that ended as they drove their SUV into the river near Rio Grande City and swam back to Mexico. This load was worth more than 100 thousand dollars to one of the cartels.
It’s been a productive couple of weeks for federal agents along the Texas Border - and a bad couple of weeks for some of the Mexican Cartels.
