Illegal US Border Crossings & Migrant Arrests Drop
How is this not good news? - Trump Administration explains:
The daily numbers reported from the US Southern Border - and across America - continue to both encourage & bedevil the new Presidential Administration during their first month in office. On the one hand, illegal border crossings have dramatically dropped - as evidenced by daily numbers reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), which are now a few hundred (versus the many thousands reported during the Biden Administration):
On the other, daily arrests by Immigrations & Customs Enforcement (ICE) - the pipeline to deportations - are falling short of the President's goals. Here are the last daily numbers ICE reported as of Jan. 31, 2025 (after which they suspended daily reports):
That's a far cry from the 1,200 to 1,500 ICE arrests President Trump expects daily - with the Washington Post reporting that is a “floor, not a ceiling.”
NewsNation reports the president has called those numbers "too (eff)ing low" and is shifting federal law enforcement officers from agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to immigration enforcement.
The Post says President Trump is replacing the top ICE officials responsible for enforcement and demanding an immediate increase in arrest numbers from their replacements.

Driving the push for more ICE arrests: The number of deportations during the last year of the Biden Administration eclipsed the record Trump achieved in 2019 during his first administration. He - and his "Border Czar" Tom Homan- are focused on beating that during his current term in office:
“If you look at the rest of interior enforcement, it’s about three times higher than it was a year ago today. Three times higher is good, but I’m not satisfied. There are more criminal aliens that need to be arrested, hundreds of thousands. We need to increase the arrests of illegal aliens, especially those with criminal convictions." -Trump "Border Czar" Tom Homan
Until that happens, the Trump Administration is emphasizing the arrests of migrants with criminal records. Here are three recent examples:
The Trump Administration is also emphasizing federal law enforcement efforts aimed at the violent Venezuelan "Tren de Aragua" migrant gang:
But the Trump Administration isn't satisfied by these recent arrests, as evidenced by comments from "Border Czar" Tom Homan:
“I got asked a question this morning. Are you happy with the number of ICE arrests? No, I'm not. We need to do more — it's not good enough. We need to find these people and take 'em off the streets” - Trump "Border Czar" Tom Homan
Do you believe the number of arrests of migrants who are illegally in the US is still too low?
