THE WEEK’S US BORDER NEWS IN BRIEF:
Happy Labor Day Weekend! I excused myself from my family’s holiday celebrations long enough to put together this edition of our weekly US Border News Newsletter:
During the week of August 30 through September 6, 2026, U.S. border security and immigration developments were highlighted by record-shattering interior ICE enforcement figures, a dramatic judicial reversal of a massive 75-country travel pause, and humanitarian concerns about immigration actions involving Haitians and migrant children.
ICE Smashes Monthly Interior Arrest Records
Historic 51,000 Arrests in August: On September 2, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officially announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended 50,925 illegal aliens in August 2026. This marked the third straight month of record-breaking arrest numbers for the agency, narrowly eclipsing July’s total of 50,208.
Aggressive Interior Sweeps: Reports detailed large-scale operations under the administration’s mass deportation mandate, including a raid at a nightclub in Memphis that yielded 121 arrests.
Federal Court Lifts the 75-Country Visa Pause
Blanket Restriction Struck Down: In a major systemic shift, a federal court ruling officially vacated the State Department’s sweeping 75-country immigrant visa pause. The policy, in effect since January 21, 2026, had frozen permanent visa issuances for nationals from countries like Colombia, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Nigeria, and Pakistan while reviewing public-charge risks.
Individualized Vetting Restored: The court ruled that blanket suspensions based solely on nationality exceeded the Secretary of State’s legal authority. Following the order, the State Department confirmed visa processing may resume, returning consulates to individualized security and financial assessments.
Escalating Humanitarian Concerns
Haitian TPS Fallout: Following the administration’s stripping of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from hundreds of thousands of migrants, human rights coalitions reported severe psychological distress within impacted communities. Advocates pointed to a tragic incident during the week where a 20-year-old Haitian student, forced into a federal tracking ankle monitor after losing status, committed suicide in interstate traffic following intense bullying and status-shaming.
The Children’s Due Process Project: Nonprofits nationwide banded together during the week to launch a unified legal offensive filing habeas corpus petitions in federal courts. The effort seeks the immediate release of migrant children who are being held in prolonged, indefinite detention facilities while awaiting accelerated removal hearings.

I always enjoy reading your columns. Do I agree with all your comments? No. The plus side is information on the border. Does the border patrol make mistakes? Of course. The one thing that we must remember is that people who come illegally have already broken the law. I have a friend who immigrated legally from Bosnia. She became a USA citizen. It was a difficult journey. She had to learn English and take a citizenship class. BTW she's furious about illegal migration.
