Jack, I am so grateful to President Donald Trump. The secure border. President Dementia was a figurehead. It was Barry Sotero' 3 term. Jack, thank you for your great information. I read your column every day.
Do you happen to know what caused the initial border traffic spike in 2018-19 on the graph? I wasn't aware of that, but it seems curious under Trump. If not for the mountain that began in 2021, that prior foothill would look quite alarming in comparison to the long downward trend. I'm very interested in why the Democrat policy changed, because it didn't happen while Obama was in office--a fact neither party cares to talk about. Mayorkas knows, but he ain't telling yet. I think that large spike in 2018-19 is worth investigating, because the timing is so weird.
The large wave of South & Central American "migrant caravans" began while Trump was in office, and - if you'll recall - he responded with policies like separating children from their parents to discourage entire families from illegally entering the US, as well as ending "catch & release" of those seeking asylum in the US.
In 2019, 1 million refugees and migrants left Venezuela during a seven-month period, which began the largest recorded refugee crisis in the Americas.
Here is a DHS News Release from 2019 that describes the situation:
"Indeed, in its fidelity to American communism, the ACPFB pursued a political agenda that often violated its stated mandate. It not only failed to protect Japanese-Americans during World War II, but it actually supported their internment. During the closing years of the war, it attempted to influence ethnic communities for the benefit of the Communist Party. False agendas, undemocratic internal controls, and duplicity drove liberal sympathizers away from the ACPFB by the early 1950s, when the pressures of the second Red Scare threatened both it and its host. The story of the ACPFB ultimately sheds new light on the nature of American communism itself-demonstrating anew its nature as a political movement in pursuit of power."
This suggests to me more than a coincidental alignment of leftist politicians around the world who can't seem to understand the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants, or why immigrants from compatible cultural ideologies are low-risk, while immigrants from hostile cultural ideologies are high-risk. It's purely a power play, as the current Democrat outrage over gerrymandering illustrates--why do they support open borders, unless migrants given welfare will be Democrat voters?
Alrighty, that's enough of my borax for today, sir...
Thanks for that clarification; I wasn't paying attention like you were back then.
Things are going to get increasingly weird with migration, because the ethical issues are not going to be easy to parse out for a morally obsessive society like America...
Are mass emigrations like the Venezuela exodus humanitarian crises, or are they weaponized migration like Cuba's Mariel Boatlift and what Putin does to Russia's unfriendly neighbors? How can we be sure, and how much responsibility do we have to help millions of foreigners even in the most deserving circumstances?
Is separating families okay or not okay? Okay when Obama's ICE did it, but not when Trump's ICE does it? Is it advisable to determine if children actually belong with their guardians at the moment of interdiction? What if there are caravans of children in the future? I know that sounds ridiculous, but think of how many preposterous migrant situations have already happened, and some of the bizarre pronouncements which emanate from Claudia Sheinbaum, and from AMLO before her.
Another massive elephant in the room: Who is going to investigate the global and UN-affiliated quango network that facilitates the logistics of international migration? People fail to ask the appropriate questions because Americans think of migration overland from our LatAm neighbors; we don't ask how exactly Africans and Arabs can fly into LatAm airports and be allowed to continue on their way. Or why Mexico has relaxed their historic hostility to ANYONE trespassing their southern border. Or why cartels have been allowed to profit from organizing a long human trafficking pipeline that not only infringes on the sovereignty of many nations, but gives cartels sensitive data about security vulnerabilities along the migrant route that can be used for many other purposes [smuggling, drug manufacturing labs, strategic terrorism against any govt that opposes their expansion, etc].
And we're not being candid about how our enemies do business. Russia and China are sponsoring weaponized migration against their opponents because it's cheaper than economic or military confrontation; just as they do in Europe and the mideast. And by cheaper, I don't mean in monetary terms. A direct confrontation with a peer adversary risks a catastrophic loss of face for the party forced to retreat. Weaponized migration and drug trafficking [a lesson the Chinese learned well from the British] is cost-free, because the linkage is plausibly deniable. Therefore I consider Maduro a Communist pawn, but that still doesn't help to discern whether a migrant caravan from Venezuela is composed of criminal troublemakers or the kind of refugees who might contribute to our society; likely a mix of both.

Thanks for the kind words! I am glad to have you aboard as a reader. -Abrazos

Apologies again, I'm on a tear this morning; no need to respond.
Here's an odd piece of historical trivia I learned about yesterday--sounds familiar:
