US authorities have long been aware that modern car bumpers make for an easy place to hide drug shipments, but that does not stop smugglers from trying. The photo at the top of this article shows a $1.2 million dollar drug load discovered in the bumper of a car crossing into San Ysidro, California, from Mexico.
A cartel managed to stuff 25 packages containing brown heroin, black tar heroin, fentanyl powder, cocaine, and methamphetamine into the rear bumper of this smuggler's car.
The ruse was spoiled by the keen nose of US Customs & Border Protection K9 Andy, who quickly sniffed out the location of the drug load and alerted his CBP handler to its presence.

That bumper-smuggling attempt, discovered a year ago, is just one of many of these attempts that US federal officers have defeated over many years. The photo below, for instance, shows a bumper full of meth yet another CBP K9 sniffed out of a car entering Nogales, Arizona from Mexico ten years ago:

But, like I wrote earlier, even though US cops have long been aware of this smuggling method, that doesn't stop Mexican Cartels from using it (over and over again).
Earlier this month, Border Patrol Agents and Homeland Security Investigators arrested two US citizens driving north from South Texas with a bumper full of cocaine. When they were pulled over, officers found 29 packages containing 78 pounds of cocaine crammed into one of their car's bumpers.
That's a drug load worth almost two and a half million dollars!

If you haven’t been convinced that some of these smugglers aren't very bright, wait until you hear about the bumbling bumper smuggler arrested last week in Arizona. Border Patrol Agents driving behind him on Interstate 8 near Yuma were astounded as bundles of fentanyl started falling from his bumper and onto the pavement in front of their patrol car!
Needless to say, the driver (a US citizen) was quickly pulled over and arrested. The load of fentanyl, once picked up off the highway and plucked out of his bumper, weighed in at 72 pounds.

Are you surprised that Mexican cartels keep trying this smuggling method that US officers are clearly aware of?
