THE WEEK’S US BORDER NEWS IN BRIEF:

During the week of August 9 to August 16, 2026, U.S. Border Security and Immigration News included expanded enforcement authority for U.S. troops, record visa revocations, and record-low numbers of apprehensions along the border.

Law Enforcement News

US troops have been given additional law enforcement authority in “National Defense Areas” established along US Borders. (Department of Defense photo)

• Expanded Military Power: A Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel advisory opinion authorized the U.S. military to detain migrants accused of trespassing in national defense zones. 8,000 US troops are assigned to the Joint Task Force-Southern Border.

• Airport Arrests: US Customs & Immigration Enforcement (ICE) has begun targeted arrests at airports of non-citizens with open immigration cases but no criminal records.

• 15 Months of Zero Releases: On August 13, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced a milestone of 15 consecutive months of zero releases at the southwest border. Border apprehensions are also at historic multi-decade lows.

Legal and Visa Changes

• Visa Revocations: On August 10, 2026, the State Department announced it has revoked over 175,000 visas since President Trump returned to office. The revocations primarily target foreign nationals with criminal records, visa violations, or those flagged as national security threats.

• In-State Tuition Lawsuits: The Trump Administration sued New York, Connecticut, and Vermont over providing in-state college tuition to undocumented students.

West Texas Border Barrier Controversy

• Big Bend National Park Dispute: Opposition continues to build in West Texas against building a $1.7 billion network of border vehicle barriers and patrol roads through Big Bend National Park. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Rodney Scott is expected to travel to the region this week to meet with Judges and Sheriffs from Texas Border Counties to discuss their concerns about the project.
