Billions for Border Security & Immigration Enforcement
via President Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act"
THE WEEK’S US BORDER NEWS IN BRIEF:
President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” provides billions of dollars to fund border security & immigration measures:
The bill allocates:
$46.5 billion: for the construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
$45 billion: for adding 100,000 new migrant detention beds.
$29.9 billion: to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for hiring new agents and transportation/deportation costs.
$10 billion to repay states like Texas for border security costs, such as “Operation Lone Star”
$10 billion: for a Homeland Security grant program to assist states with immigration enforcement.
$7.8 billion: for hiring Border Patrol agents and purchasing vehicles.
$6.2 billion: for border technology.
$3.3 billion: for hiring immigration judges and staff.
Increased fees: for asylum applications and other immigration procedures.
Codification of the "Remain in Mexico" policy .
Expanded expedited removal: of immigrants.
Increased state and local involvement: in immigration enforcement.
Restrictions on access to healthcare: for certain non-citizens.
Quadrupled detention capacity: for immigrants.
President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem joined Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and other state leaders Tuesday for the opening of an immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades nicknamed "Alligator Alcatraz."
About 200 U.S. Marines are deploying to assist with Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Florida, U.S. Northern Command said Thursday. The Marines would deploy from Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina, The soldiers would not perform law-enforcement tasks, NORTHCOM said, and would be "specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain."
A federal judge in New York has blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to strip immigration protections from up to 500,000 Haitians who fled instability in their country. Their victory may be short-lived, considering that the Supreme Court previously allowed the administration to quickly end similar protections for Venezuelans.
The Justice Department is aggressively prioritizing efforts to strip some Americans of their U.S. citizenship. Department leadership is directing its attorneys to prioritize denaturalization in cases involving naturalized citizens who commit certain crimes, and giving U.S. attorneys wider discretion on when to pursue this tactic, according to a June 11 memo published online.
TRAGEDY IN TEXAS:
I am regularly updating a story about the ongoing flooding tragedy in Kerr County, Texas, where dozens have been killed and are missing. Campers and other vacationers had packed into the scenic Guadalupe River area for the July 4th weekend when heavy rain caused catastrophic flooding. I am investigating why that county lacks a system to warn those along the river to flee to higher ground, while another county downstream has evacuation sirens tied to automatic flood gauges along its stretch of the river. You can read that story HERE.
Over at the Texas Rural Reporter, Suzanne Bellsnyder reveals that Kerr County’s State Representative voted against a bill that would have funded a warning system for Kerr County.
At The Eyewall, Texas, Meteorologist Matt Lanza explains the weather events that converged to produce this historic and catastrophic flooding.
And, at The Honest Broker, Roger Pielke Jr. examines what led up to this “tragedy that should never happen again.”
In the days ahead, US Border News will continue to examine this tragedy and focus on how to prevent this from happening again.
