The impacts of the weekend arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, along with his wife, during a US military raid in Caracas, to face US drug and weapons charges, are being closely watched along the US Southern Border.

Florida and Texas are home to the largest number of Venezuelans in the US.

Southern Florida, particularly the Miami suburbs of Doral and Weston, is home to at least 300,000 Venezuelans. In Texas, the second largest Venezuelan community (estimated at 60,000) is in Houston, where most have settled in the suburb of Katy.

Additionally, Houston is the headquarters of ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips (both of which had their operations in Venezuela seized by the Venezuelan government), as well as Chevron (the only US oil company still operating in Venezuela).

Ironically, one of the Venezuelan celebrations of Maduro’s capture in Doral, Florida, occurred around the Chevron gas pumps outside a popular Venezuelan eatery and store:

The mood within the Venezuelan community had been one of fear after President Trump announced the end of “Temporary Protected Status” (TPS), which allowed many of them to remain in the U.S. legally. That matter is being challenged in court. 600,000 Venezuelans with TPS remain in limbo. -But that did not stop many of them from rejoicing over Maduro’s ouster.

Elsewhere in Southern Florida, reaction ranged from celebration by GOP lawmakers to worries by Democrats about what happens in Venezuela now that Maduro is removed from power.

Southern Florida’s sizable Cuban community is also cautiously watching for signs of possible spillover effects of Maduro’s ouster in their homeland. Cuba helped Maduro remain in power by staffing Venezuela’s Intelligence Services and Maduro’s personal security forces, many of whom were killed by US forces during Maduro’s capture.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez condemned the US action while waving a Venezuelan flag in front of a large crowd in Havana on Saturday.

When asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday whether the Cuban Government was the Trump Administration’s next target, Secretary of State Marco Rubio (who also serves as the president’s National Security Advisor) had an ominous warning:

“The Cuban Government is a huge problem. I think they’re in a lot of trouble, yes. I’m not going to talk to you about what our future steps are going to be and our policies are going to be right now in this regard. But I don’t think it’s any mystery that we are not big fans of the Cuban regime, who, by the way, are the ones that were propping up Maduro.” -US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

During a news conference Saturday, January 3, 2026, President Trump vowed justice for US oil companies whose investments and infrastructure were confiscated by Venezuela decades ago:

“This constituted one of the largest thefts of American property in the history of our country. Considered the largest theft of property in the history of our country. Massive oil infrastructure was taken like we were babies, so we didn’t do anything about it ... America will never allow foreign powers to rob our people or drive us back into and out of our own hemisphere.” -President Donald Trump

In Houston, where the largest US energy exploration companies are headquartered, Trump’s announcement of their expected role in stabilizing a post-Maduro Venezuela through massive private investment likely has rocked those companies’ boardrooms:

“We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure and start making money for the country.” -President Donald Trump

All that assumes the Venezuelans cooperate in such an effort, of course.

The larger danger for US Southern Border States is that things don’t go as President Trump plans. If Maduro’s ouster further destabilizes Venezuela, another large wave of migration from that country could be quickly unleashed.

The neighboring country of Colombia - clearly worried about that possibility - is already reinforcing its border crossings with Venezuela.

If another wave of Venezuelan migration occurs, US Southern Border states have already seen what could happen next:

The difference between 2022 and now is that US troops and barriers have since been deployed to reinforce the Southern US-Mexico Land Border. Whether that would be enough to prevent another large wave of Venezuelans from entering the country (should one occur) is an open question.

And, for the moment, it’s a possibility that the Governor of Texas, whose state was on the front lines of the last mass-migration from Venezuela, does not appear to be worried about:

Although Texas job growth outpaces the rest of the nation, new research by the US Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas indicates the job market in Texas may be in for a bumpy ride in the near future due to the Trump Administration’s crackdown on immigration.

The Dallas Fed notes that Texas firms have grown more dependent on foreign-born workers. The February Dallas Fed Texas Business Outlook Surveys (TBOS) found that roughly a quarter of responding Texas businesses relied on workers from outside the country in 2024. This was a large increase from 15 percent just one year prior.

Legal immigration is slowing as processing times by immigration authorities have increased. In addition, the Dallas Fed notes that “authorities have canceled the refugee resettlement program, intensified background checks, increased fees on visa applicants, and travel bans. These measures have affected legal inflows.”

The Dallas Fed report forecasts that these “immigration policy changes will negatively affect the ability to hire and retain foreign-born workers at one in five Texas businesses this year.”

(The extent of the impact on Texas firms is likely understated because the Texas Service Sector Outlook Survey does not include some sectors that heavily rely on immigrant workers, such as construction and agriculture).

The Dallas Fed notes that “more firms reported a worsened ability to retain workers over the prior three months (13 percent) than an improved ability (2 percent), a sharp contrast to responses over the prior year and a half. The shifting sentiment is notable in the manufacturing, service, and retail sectors.

“Among firms affected by immigration policy, about 40 percent indicated employees had missed work due to fear of immigration enforcement. A visitor’s bureau noted, “The hospitality community relies on considerable labor-intensive work—housekeeping, landscape, food and beverage, etc. Workers and contractors are more and more fearful of coming into work in hotels and restaurants.” - Dallas Fed Texas Business Outlook Survey Analysis

Nearly 60 percent of impacted companies reported they were unable to hire qualified workers because such individuals often lack work permits or legal status. Additionally, 49 percent noted difficulty hiring due to fewer foreign-born applicants.

Will existing employees benefit?

Texas firms are taking measures to address the impact. Chief among them is increasing work hours for existing employees. Other responses include planned wage and benefit increases, as well as more hiring of U.S.-born workers, naturalized citizens, or legal permanent residents.

However, the Dallas Fed cautions that this silver lining for existing workers also comes with bad news for the overall economy:

“Less immigration doesn’t necessarily mean higher or lower unemployment, but it will likely result in slower economic growth. The labor market will show this first in the form of less job growth. Lower GDP growth will eventually follow. The U.S.-born workforce cannot make up for reduced immigration due to demographic pressures, including an aging population and low birth rates.”

A report issued this week by the Pew Research Center confirms that in the years after the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. immigration policy changes fueled a sharp rise in both legal and illegal immigration.

The number of unauthorized immigrants in the United States reached an all-time high of 14 million in 2023 after two consecutive years of record growth, Pew Research determined.

Which groups of U.S. unauthorized immigrants had deportation protection in 2023?

The Pew Report found that, while “several groups of unauthorized immigrants had some protections from deportation in July 2023 … another 1.0 million migrants encountered by U.S. Border Patrol were released into the U.S., typically with orders to appear in immigration court.”

Their deportation protections are temporary and can quickly change as indicated in the chart below:

What is the composition of the U.S. immigrant population?

As of 2023, the Pew Study found that “unauthorized immigrants represented 4.1% of the total U.S. population and 27% of the foreign-born population.”

Meanwhile, Pew reports that the lawful immigrant population also grew steadily from 24.1 million in 2000 to 37.8 million in 2023. The growth was driven by a rapid increase in the number of naturalized citizens, from 10.7 million to 23.8 million.

The overall U.S. immigrant population reached an all-time high of more than 53 million in January 2025, accounting for a record 15.8% of the U.S. population.

However, growth slowed substantially starting in early 2024, and the number declined by more than 1 million between January and June 2025, according to data from the Current Population Survey.

The Pew Research Center says this “would be the first sustained drop in the U.S. immigrant population since the 1960s.”

(NOTE: This is a very important development, which I will comment on further at the end of this article)

What countries do unauthorized immigrants come from?

Though Mexico remains the country where the most unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. are from, Pew Research found it accounted for 30% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants living here in 2023, as indicated in the chart below:

After Mexico, the countries with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in the U.S. in 2023 were:

• Guatemala (850,000)

• El Salvador (850,000)

• Honduras (775,000)

• India (680,000)

According to the Pew Research Center:

“In 2023, Venezuela was the country of birth for 650,000 U.S. unauthorized immigrants. This population has seen particularly fast growth, from 55,000 in 2007 to 195,000 in 2021 and 650,000 in 2023.

Other countries have also had large increases in the number of unauthorized immigrants in recent years. Totals from Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Ukraine and Peru all more than doubled from 2021 to 2023.”

What states do unauthorized immigrants live in?

The six states with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in 2023 were:

• California (2.3 million)

• Texas (2.1 million)

• Florida (1.6 million)

• New York (825,000)

• New Jersey (600,000)

• Illinois (550,000)

These states have consistently had the most unauthorized immigrants since at least 1980. However, in 2007, California had 1.2 million more unauthorized immigrants than Texas. Today, it has only about 200,000 more.

Pew Research notes that the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population has also become considerably less geographically concentrated over time. In 2023, the top six states were home to 56% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants, down from 80% in 1990.

How many children in the U.S. have unauthorized immigrant parents?

About 4.6 million children under 18 born in the U.S. lived with an unauthorized immigrant parent in 2023, up from 4.0 million in 2021 and below the previous high of 4.9 million in 2016. As of 2023, Pew Research says these children accounted for about 75% of all minor children living with an unauthorized immigrant parent.

In 2023, about 300,000 babies were born in the U.S. to an unauthorized immigrant, up from about 200,000 in 2021.)

How long have unauthorized immigrants lived in the U.S.?

A record number of unauthorized immigrants have been in the U.S. for a relatively short time due to the rapid growth in the overall unauthorized population since 2021.

In 2023, more than 4.2 million unauthorized immigrant adults had been in the U.S. for less than five years, up from 1.8 million in 2021. The 2023 figure is more than double the number in any year from 2010 to 2019, Pew Research reports:

How many unauthorized immigrants are in the labor force?

Pew Research finds that the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. workforce grew from 7.8 million in 2021 to a record 9.7 million in 2023.

Unauthorized immigrants represented 5.6% of the U.S. workforce in 2023, a new high. The previous peak was 5.4% in 2007.

Pew Research shows the U.S. may be at an historic inflection point:

Although the headline of this report is the number of illegal aliens reaching record levels in 2023, remember that Pew Research reports that growth slowed substantially starting in early 2024, and the number declined by more than 1 million between January and June 2025.

This “would be the first sustained drop in the U.S. immigrant population since the 1960s,” the report notes.

We are at an historic inflection point at which the US could lose more immigrants than it gains for the first time in 50 years, especially as the Trump Administration cancels Temporary Protected Status granted some immigrants and ramps up arrests and deportations of others.

While many welcome such a change, others warn that it could come at a cost.

The Washington Post recently noted that ”the workforce is already growing more slowly than it did 10 or 20 years ago as the bulge of baby boomers reaches retirement age.”

“You take those people away at a time when demographics are resulting in a lack of replacement for retired workers — all that’s a recipe for higher inflation,” Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, told the Post.

An analysis of the raw data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) household survey by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) is turning heads. From the outset of this US Border News In-depth Report, we should note that their findings are not without controversy (which we will address at the end of this article).

Foreign-born population drop since January

The CIS “estimates that the illegal immigrant population declined an astonishing 1.6 million (10 percent) to 14.2 million from January to July of this year.” The CIS says this would be “by far the largest six-month decline that has ever occurred within the same year in the CPS since January of 1994 when the CPS began to ask about citizenship on a regular basis.”

Non-citizens are behind this sharp decline

The CIS analysis shows “the decline in the foreign-born since January has been entirely among those who are not U.S. citizens. The number of non-citizens is down 2.6 million, while the number of naturalized citizens is actually up 373,000.”

Non-citizen numbers from Latin America down sharply

The CIS analysis finds that “from January to July 2025, the number of post-1980 Latin American non-citizens declined by 1.6 million or about 10 percent.” The CIS concludes that “these results strongly support the idea that the election of Donald Trump, his rhetoric, high-profile enforcement actions, and border policies have caused a large number of illegal immigrants to leave the country and many fewer to enter.”

US employment of foreign-born workers down

The CIS study finds that “the number of immigrants employed is down 1.01 million, while employment among the U.S.-born is up 2.46 million.”

(However, the CIS notes that “given the way the weighting system works in the CPS, if the overall foreign-born population declines in the survey, it must be accompanied by an increase in the overall U.S.-born because individuals can only be U.S.- or foreign-born. (So) the 2.46 million increase in the number of employed U.S.-born Americans since January may be in part a statistical artifact due to the falloff in the foreign-born.”)

Illegal immigrant population drop follows boom

The “preliminary estimate” by the CIS is that “the number of illegal immigrants declined 1.6 million, from 15.8 million in January of this year to 14.2 million in July. This reverses the dramatic increase in the illegal immigrant population we have reported from January 2021 to January 2025.”

The CIS report is touted by the Trump administration

The CIS analysis (which credited President Trump’s immigration polices) has been cited as “UNPRECEDENTED” by the Department of Homeland Security:

But how reliable are these numbers?

The CIS report and its findings are not without controversy and criticism.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick with the pro-immigrant American Immigration Council calls the CIS analysis “embarrassing,” and points to the statement below in the CIS report as evidence that their entire estimate could be wrong:

“CIS's own article admits that the entire estimate would be wrong if noncitizens were not responding to the Census surveys at the same rates as they previously did — which they themselves admit is a likely possibility given the current enforcement binge.” Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, American Immigration Council

About 6,100 attempted crossings were detected along the US Southern Border with Mexico in June 2025, 92.7% fewer than in June 2024, according to a usafacts.org analysis of US government data.

This is sharply down from the high of attempted illegal crossings, which corresponded to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (see chart below):

So, how many of those migrants had a criminal record (aside from illegally entering the US)?

During the last full fiscal year, the number of criminal noncitizen arrests — now referred to by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as criminal alien arrests — represented 1.1% of all border apprehensions by the US Border Patrol (USBP), which amounts to about 17,000 migrants:

Besides immigration offenses, alcohol & drug offenses were the most common crimes committed by illegal aliens arrested by the US Border Patrol:

Despite the dramatic drop in illegal crossings, the El Paso Border Patrol Sector (and its neighboring vast Big Bend Sector in West Texas, which is responsible for a 517-mile stretch of the US-Mexico Border) has become the new human smuggling “hot spot,” because it is so large, so remote, and so difficult to police:

That’s why the Department of Defense stationed some of the first US Army “Stryker Crews” assigned to the Southern US Border Security Mission there last March, when President Trump first began militarizing the Southern Border:

And it’s why last month, the US Border Patrol deployed an “Aerostat” Aerial Balloon Surveillance System there to tighten security along a large stretch of the Rio Grande border with Mexico:

Are migrants responsible for the US Fentanyl Crisis? Not according to US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) statistics, a recent study reveals. The American Immigration Council (AIC) says Fentanyl Smugglers are overwhelmingly more likely to be U.S. citizens than illegal aliens, based on the numbers reported by the CBP.

Because most fentanyl seizures occur at ports of entry (see chart below), the AIC says the majority of fentanyl is smuggled by people who can enter the United States legally. These individuals hope to evade detection by posing as regular travelers entering or re-entering the United States. As a result, the cartels tend to recruit U.S. citizens as fentanyl smugglers because they receive the least scrutiny from CBP officers when crossing the border.

According to the AIC study, 78 percent of all fentanyl seizures at those ports of entry along the southwest border from fiscal years 2019 through June 2024 involved U.S. citizen smugglers.

The AIC found that the most common method of attempting to smuggle fentanyl from Mexico into the US is by passenger vehicle. A smaller number of smugglers attempt to bring the drug into the country by walking it across the border or via a commercial vehicle.

The AIC reports that US fentanyl seizures peaked in spring 2023 and have been declining since. CBP fentanyl seizures hit record levels in April 2023 at 3,220 pounds. Seizures fell nearly every month after that, and by March 2025 had dropped to just 760 pounds.

Meanwhile, peak or not, US authorities continue to seize large amounts of fentanyl. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently reported it has seized 44 million fentanyl pills so far this year, while the CBP reports seizing more than 9,000 pounds of the drug since October of 2025.

In Texas, the state’s Department of Public Safety has seized hundreds of millions of lethal doses of fentanyl during its ongoing “Operation Lone Star” border security mission:

And, in Atlanta, US Federal Prosecutors last month convicted a previously-convicted felon for running a sophisticated fentanyl-distribution and manufacturing operation that used two large pill press machines capable of pressing up to 25,000 fentanyl pills per hour, as well as hydraulic presses to form fentanyl powder into kilogram-sized bricks of the drug.

In addition to the fentanyl kingpin’s arrest, federal agents also seized hundreds of thousands of pressed pills as well as 56 kilograms of fentanyl, 84 kilograms of methamphetamine, nearly 10 kilograms of heroin, approximately four kilograms of cocaine, more than $145,000 in cash, and a book titled “How to Avoid Federal Drug Conspiracy & Firearms Charges.”

Migrant deportation flights from the United States reached their highest level last month since January 2020, when refugee advocate Thomas H. Cartwright first began compiling the statistics cited in this US Border News In-Depth Report.

In June 2025, there were 209 removal flights. The prior high was 193 during the September 2021 mass deportation of Haitians, with the next highest month at 153 in August 2023. The June numbers were 54% higher than the average for the prior six months.

Since President Trump’s second inauguration, deportation flights have totaled 829, up 12% over the same period in 2024 (President Biden’s last year in office).

The number of countries accepting deportation flights has also expanded to around 40 unique countries in June. The number of flights maintained the highest weekly level (11-14) reached in mid-May, ranging from 8-11 weekdays to 4-5 on weekends.

There were an average of 7 deportation flights per day in June 2025, compared to a prior 3-month average of 4.9 (up 43% per day), and 4.8 daily deportation flights in June 2024 (a 46% increase).

Total deportation flights in June reached an all-time 5+ year high of 209, compared to the 193 monthly removal flights during the Haitian mass deportation in September 2021. These numbers represent a 10% increase from the previous month. They were 54% above the prior 6-month average and 46% higher than June of the previous year.

June also saw one unusual flight worth noting: On June 3, 2025, a “Special High Risk Charter Flight” left Dallas to return 122 illegal aliens to China.

US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) says 96 men and 26 women, ranging in age from 19 to 68, were placed aboard the flight.

ICE says criminal aliens aboard the flight included:

• A 47-year-old man convicted of murder.

• A 49-year-old man convicted of drug trafficking.

• A 27-year-old man convicted of rape.

• A 55-year-old man convicted of human smuggling.

• A 50-year-old woman convicted of bribery.

A change in immigration enforcement tactics from prioritizing illegal aliens with criminal histories to arresting as many as possible, including those with no criminal histories, appears to be costing the Trump Administration broad public support for their polices.

Gallup’s latest polling now shows a shift in a four-year trend of rising concern about immigration that began in 2021, reflecting changes among all major party groups.

Gallup Poll Highlights:

• 30% of Americans want immigration decreased, down from 55% a year ago

• Record-high 79% consider immigration good for the country

• Support down for border wall, mass deportation

(These findings are based on a June 2-26, 2025, poll of 1,402 U.S. adults, including oversamples of Hispanic and Black Americans, weighted to match national demographics.)

This public opinion shift occurs as US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) has stopped prioritizing the arrests of illegal aliens with criminal histories (“The Worst, First”) over those with no criminal record, to meet arrest quotas demanded by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem (see chart below).

So masked ICE Agents began arresting migrants without criminal records who had been cooperating with authorities by (among other tactics) voluntarily appearing for hearings, and arresting them at the courthouse when they complied.

Scenes like these appear to have contributed to a shift in public opinion.

After climbing to 55% in 2024, Gallup says the percentage of Americans who say immigration should be reduced has dropped by nearly half to 30%. Sentiment is thus back to the level measured in 2021, before the desire for reduced immigration began to gain momentum. Meanwhile, 38% now want immigration kept at its current level, and 26% say it should be increased.

With illegal immigration levels down dramatically and refugee programs suspended, Gallup finds the desire for less immigration has fallen among all party groups, but it is most pronounced among Republicans, down 40 percentage points over the past year to 48%. Among independents, this sentiment is down 21 points to 30%, and among Democrats, down 12 points to 16%.

When asked if immigration is generally a good thing or a bad thing for the country, a record-high 79% of U.S. adults call it a good thing; a record-low 17% see it as a bad thing.

Gallup notes this is consistent with the long-term pattern of more Americans viewing immigration as helpful than harmful to the country. But today’s endorsement is up from 64% last year and represents a reversal of the downward trend seen in this view from 2021 to 2024.

Gallup says the recent jump in perceptions of immigration being a good thing is largely owed to a sharp increase among Republicans and, to a lesser extent, independents. These groups’ views have essentially rebounded to 2020 levels after souring in the intervening years.

Gallup’s poll also finds that Democrats’ belief that immigration is beneficial to the country is also up slightly, to a record-high 91%. However, this is generally consistent with their highly positive perspective on immigration over the past decade, with at least 80% calling it a good thing each year since 2016.

In addition to supporting increased or stable immigration levels, the Gallup Poll finds more Americans now favor offering undocumented immigrants pathways to citizenship, while fewer support stringent measures to deter or reverse illegal immigration.

Support for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents has declined 17 points to 59%, from 76% a year ago. And backing for expanding the U.S.-Mexico border wall has dropped eight points to 45%. This likely reflects people perceiving these measures as less necessary given the sharp drop in illegal border crossings.

Support is also lower today for deporting all undocumented immigrants, with 38% now favoring this as the administration is attempting it, down from 47% last year when it was a Trump campaign promise.

In terms of a new policy being debated this year, Gallup finds lukewarm support to denying alleged gang members the ability to challenge deportation in court — half favor this being done, while 45% oppose it.

Meanwhile, support for allowing undocumented immigrants to become U.S. citizens has risen to 78%, up from 70% last year. Gallup notes this is also back to the level of support seen in 2019 (81%) while slightly lower than in 2016 (84%). Approval is higher still, albeit statistically unchanged, for offering individuals brought to the U.S. illegally as children a pathway to citizenship, with support holding above 80%.

President Trump’s handling of immigration during his second term has also largely begun to poll negatively. Thirty-five percent approve of his handling of the issue, including 21% strongly approving, while 62% disapprove, including 45% strongly.

Gallup notes that these views are sharply partisan: 85% of Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of immigration, compared with 28% of independents and just 2% of Democrats. Notably, 81% of Democrats strongly disapprove, while 59% of Republicans strongly approve. Independents are much more likely to strongly disapprove (45%) than to strongly approve (14%).

The bottom line, according to Gallup:

“The surge in illegal border crossings during the Biden administration triggered heightened public concern about immigration and increased demand for stricter enforcement. The Trump administration’s swift and visible response appears to have defused that concern, particularly among Republicans. As a result, Americans’ attitudes on immigration have largely returned to where they stood before the recent border surge, marked by broader appreciation for immigration, less desire to reduce it, and more support for pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. At the same time, support for tougher border control and aggressive deportation policies has eased since last year, with these measures mostly losing their appeal among Democrats and independents.”
