• Mass Visa Revocations: Coinciding with the start of the new fiscal year on October 1, the State Department confirmed it has revoked over 250,000 visas due to stricter screening protocols, fraud, and national security concerns. This came alongside the expansion of mandatory online social media screening for foreign applicants.

• Arizona Immigration Crackdown: The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona announced criminal charges against 374 individuals for immigration-related offenses—such as illegal re-entry and human smuggling—in just a single week of enforcement operations ending October 2.

• Massive Deportation Hub Expansion: On October 1, The New York Times detailed a major expansion of the administration’s busiest deportation hub in Alexandria, Louisiana, introducing a new facility designed to hold and accelerate the removal of immigrant families and children.

Supreme Court & Legal Battles over Deportations

• Third-Country Deportations Disputed: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) filed an emergency request asking the U.S. Supreme Court on September 24, 2026, to allow the resumption of a controversial policy involving deporting migrants to third-party nations. This follows lower court orders that blocked the flights, ruling that DHS must first provide adequate procedures for migrants to claim they face torture in those destination countries.

• Warrantless ICE Arrests Restricted: In Southern California, a federal judge ordered a halt to indiscriminate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests that lack a judge’s signature. The court ruled that warrantless civil immigration arrests are only legal if a person poses an immediate flight risk, a decision expected to sharply decrease enforcement numbers in the Central District of California.

Enforcement Operations & Legal Immigration Backlogs

• Report: ICE Wasted Millions: In its rush to expand detention capacity, ICE wasted millions of taxpayer dollars, the Government Accountability Office found in a report released Thursday. CBS News reported that the agency failed to account for long-term costs in acquiring detention centers and lost $20 million in unrecoverable costs purchasing the warehouses it no longer plans to use, the review found.

• 23 Migrants Apprehended At Sea: CBP Air and Marine Operations and the U.S. Coast Guard interdicted a smuggling vessel early Tuesday morning, resulting in the apprehension of 23 illegal aliens near Angelfish Creek, Florida. The interdiction resulted in the apprehension of one suspected smuggler, a Cuban national, and 22 illegal aliens of various nationalities.

• Smugglers Lock Migrants in Railcars: For the fourth time in recent weeks, Del Rio Sector, Texas Border Patrol agents encountered illegal aliens who had been locked inside a freight car by smugglers. A Border Patrol canine alerted agents to an autorack car carrying automobiles. Four people were found locked inside with no means of escape.

• Systemic Backlogs & Policy Patchworks: Reports from the George W. Bush Presidential Center indicate that administrative restrictions are projected to slash legal immigration by 33% to 50% by the end of the administration’s term. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is on track to adjudicate fewer applications in 2026 than in any year over the past decade, causing the visa and green card backlog to balloon to a record 12.1 million pending cases.

First Panels of the “Big Bend Border Wall” Are Up:

Installation of the first panels of Texas' Big Bend “Border Wall” tops this week’s US Border Newsletter. News of this development was first reported by Travis Bubenik of Marfa Public Radio and Laiken Jordahl of the Center for Biological Diversity on Thursday, September 17, 2026:

Their reports documented the beginning of construction of what is known as “Big Bend 1,” which accounts for just over 47 miles of the 175-mile-long project in the Big Bend, and importantly does NOT include either the Big Bend National Park or State Park further upriver along the Rio Grande, which has generated the most opposition to the project (and where construction has been “temporarily” paused).

Four Killed in US Attack of Suspected Drug Smuggling Boat:

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, US Military forces attacked a suspected drug smuggling boat in the Caribbean, killing all four people aboard the vessel:

The Associated Press reports that the US has now killed more than 230 people aboard 69 boats since the Trump Administration ordered the attacks to begin almost a year ago.

Florida Fishing Charter Boat Lands a Drone:

Also on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Pensacola-based Hot Spot Fishing Charters discovered an unmarked, unmanned aerial vehicle floating in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida West Coast. After taking some photos documenting their “catch,” the craft was turned over to the U.S. military, which has not commented on the incident.

The craft in the photos strongly resembles a Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS), a cloned version of Iran’s Shahad-136 drones that the US military has acknowledged deploying to the Middle East and is continuing to upgrade and test in the US.

ICE-Involved Shooting in Austin, Texas

On Sunday, September 20, 2026, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was involved in a shooting in North Austin that sent a man to the hospital in “serious, but stable condition,” according to the Associated Press. Few details have been released, and Texas Democratic Congressmen Greg Cesar and Joaquin Castro are demanding “body camera footage and full accountability.”

The victim’s attorney says he was making a DoorDash delivery when he was shot. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.

Dumbest Smuggling Attempt Ever?

In what may possibly be the dumbest (or boldest) drug smuggling attempt ever, on Friday, September 18, 2026, US Border Patrol Chief Rosario “Pete” Vasquez relayed an unbelievable story from his agents at a remote checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas. When their K-9 suddenly showed interest in a commercial van that rolled up packed with boxes of loose “cigarettes,” they asked the driver for the manifest to better understand what he was hauling. Incredibly, the shipment was described as “NON-MARIJUANA.”

Predictably, tests revealed it to be - (I know you’ll be shocked) - ACTUAL MARIJUANA!

The large load of loose joints weighed in at almost 1,500 pounds with a street value above a million dollars.

A large meth seizure (utilizing a novel smuggling method) tops this edition of our weekly US Border News Newsletter:

On September 10, 2026, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced that its agents seized a large load of methamphetamine disguised as cabbage arriving by truck from Mexico in McAllen, Texas.

Once they unwrapped the cabbage leaves that Mexican cartel smugglers used to try to sneak the drugs into the US, the drugs weighed in at 2,500 pounds.

Here are other notable U.S. border security and immigration developments that occurred during the week of September 5–12, 2026:

• Detention Policy Struck Down: In a 2–1 ruling on September 10, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit rejected the administration’s policy requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to mandatorily detain certain broad categories of immigrants without offering them a bond hearing. The Fourth Circuit became the ninth federal appeals court to strike down this policy, widening a federal circuit split with the Fifth and Eighth Circuits.

• Commercial License Crackdown: On September 9, ICE launched a specialized tip line to target fraud involving commercial driver's licenses (CDLs). The enforcement push follows a Department of Transportation shutdown of over 110 driving schools where thousands of drivers allegedly bypassed mandatory English-language proficiency checks.

• Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Reprieve: The Trump administration said immigrants from El Salvador will for ​now keep their temporary protected status, which was scheduled to expire on Wednesday. More than 170,000 Salvadorans currently rely on the status.

• Impending Public Charge Deadline: Immigrants and advocacy groups are preparing for a massive expansion of “Public Charge” inadmissibility rules taking effect in mid-September, which will subject green card applicants to rigid financial, age, and health scrutiny.

This marked the third straight month of record-breaking arrest numbers for the agency, narrowly eclipsing July’s total of 50,208.

• Aggressive Interior Sweeps: Reports detailed large-scale operations under the administration’s mass deportation mandate, including a raid at a nightclub in Memphis that yielded 121 arrests.

Federal Court Lifts the 75-Country Visa Pause

• Blanket Restriction Struck Down: In a major systemic shift, a federal court ruling officially vacated the State Department’s sweeping 75-country immigrant visa pause. The policy, in effect since January 21, 2026, had frozen permanent visa issuances for nationals from countries like Colombia, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Nigeria, and Pakistan while reviewing public-charge risks.

• Individualized Vetting Restored: The court ruled that blanket suspensions based solely on nationality exceeded the Secretary of State’s legal authority. Following the order, the State Department confirmed visa processing may resume, returning consulates to individualized security and financial assessments.

Escalating Humanitarian Concerns

• Haitian TPS Fallout: Following the administration’s stripping of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from hundreds of thousands of migrants, human rights coalitions reported severe psychological distress within impacted communities. Advocates pointed to a tragic incident during the week where a 20-year-old Haitian student, forced into a federal tracking ankle monitor after losing status, committed suicide in interstate traffic following intense bullying and status-shaming.

• Visa Revocations for Asylum Seekers: The Associated Press reports that the Trump administration is preparing to revoke the business and tourism visas of up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are currently seeking asylum status in the United States. If it happens, the move would be the largest single mass revocation of visas in U.S. history and would likely face legal challenges.

• Visa Appointment Pause: The Christian Science Monitor on Wednesday reported that the U.S. State Department has paused immigrant visa appointments abroad to conduct in-depth training for consular officers regarding new “public charge” screening standards. However, on Friday, Courthouse News Service reported a federal judge blocked that move.

• No Deportations based on “Political Speech”: A federal judge on Friday declared that the Trump administration’s efforts to deport noncitizens for political speech (which were generally being applied to those supporting Palestinian causes) run counter to the Constitution’s First and Fifth Amendments, the latest legal rebuke of the White House’s expansive immigration agenda.

• Big Bend Wall Construction Pause Extended: Also on Friday, a federal judge in San Antonio extended a temporary pause on ground-disturbing border wall construction in the Big Bend National Park region until mid-September.

Immigration Enforcement

• Deportations and Criminal Charges: The Department of Homeland Security reported its ongoing operations to deport noncitizens with criminal convictions, while federal prosecutors in Texas charged hundreds of individuals for illegal entry and felony reentry.

• Milo Yiannopoulos Deported: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos in New Orleans and returned him to the United Kingdom on Thursday after his authorization to be in the US expired, and he did not appear at an immigration hearing.

Immigration Enforcement & Border Security:

• Haiti Deportations Begin: The first deportation flight to Haiti since the US Supreme Court ended “Temporary Protected Status for Haitian migrants landed in that nation on Thursday. However, none of 161 Haitians aboard the plane had TPS status and were deportable for other reasons, including those who had served prison sentences, The Haitian Times reported.

• Operation Tidal Wave: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents arrested 11 cruise ship crew members at the Port of Boston as part of “Operation Tidal Wave” for their part in the reception and disbursement of child sexual abuse material and child sexual exploitation material.

• Border Apprehension Trends: The Border Patrol’s July migrant apprehensions dropped 6 percent from June, a decline less pronounced than expected for the peak of summer heat. The Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley in south Texas leads all sectors in migrant apprehensions. Recoveries of the remains of migrants who have died in the desert increased from last year in Arizona.

• On Friday, August 21, 2026, Judge Jeannette Vargas of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated a major Trump administration policy that had suspended the processing of immigrant visas for nationals from 75 countries.

• On Monday, August 17, 2026, a federal judge in Los Angeles ordered new independent oversight of immigrant children’s detention this week, appointing both an independent monitor and a special master after finding that officials at facilities in Texas and California likely held children and other detainees in unsafe temperatures and denied them soap and adequate sleeping conditions.

• On Aug. 18, 2026, a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Policy Alert announced highly scrutinized updates to its "public charge" inadmissibility rules. Officers are now directed to heavily vet the long-term financial history and benefit use of prospective sponsors.

• Also on August 18, 2026, a coalition of higher education groups and labor unions filed a federal lawsuit to block a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rule that replaces "duration of status" with a four-year cap on international student visas. The rule takes effect on September 15, 2026.

• Environmental Waivers Upheld: A local development board had sued the federal government, arguing the heavy steel barriers would permanently damage the municipal levee system and trigger severe flooding. The judge ruled that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) holds the legal authority to waive local and environmental laws to achieve its border infrastructure goals.

ICE Body-Camera Rollout

• End of August Deadline: On Saturday, August 8, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced it expects to equip and train every field officer and agent nationwide with body-worn cameras by the end of the month.

• “Self-Deport or Face Arrest”: Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin publicly announced that the department is actively tracking individuals whose Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has ended, issuing a blunt warning on social media: “These individuals can either self-deport or we’ll arrest you and send you back. It’s that simple.”

• The “Voluntary” Exit Offer: The administration continued promoting a program offering free outbound plane tickets and a $2,600 compliance check for migrants who leave the U.S. voluntarily rather than face formal deportation.

VISA Bond Program Implemented

• Pilot Program Made Permanent: On August 3, 2026, the US State Department issued a final rule establishing a permanent Visa Bond Program for B-1/B-2 visitor visa applicants from 50 countries (primarily located in Africa and parts of South and Central Asia) identified as having high overstay rates or inadequate security and vetting infrastructure. ICE Domestic Surge and New Airport Front

The Trump administration has shifted immigration enforcement efforts into the nation’s interior through the following actions:

• Airport Crackdowns: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) entered into a data-sharing pact with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Officers deployed to at least 15 major domestic airports to target and arrest individuals flying domestically who have overstayed visas or possess expired documentation, including those with pending applications.

• High Detentions & New Operations: Building off of June’s record-high 43,000 detentions, ICE launched targeted city operations, beginning with a major enforcement push in New York City intended to expand to other municipalities.

• Federal Data Sharing: The Office of Refugee Resettlement has shared over 460,000 data “leads” with ICE concerning unaccompanied minors and their adult sponsors, significantly elevating local arrest and deportation risks.

Major Asylum Rule Alteration

On July 27, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued an immediate Interim Final Rule aimed at curbing the asylum system’s backlog.

• No-Interview Referrals: Under the new rule, USCIS asylum officers are authorized to bypass the standard initial interview and refer affirmative asylum applicants directly to Department of Justice (DOJ) immigration courts.

• Impact: Administration officials state this will cut down the 1 million case backlog by 30%. Conversely, immigration advocacy groups, such as the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), criticized the policy as a move designed to systematically fast-track application denials and expedite swift deportations.

Border Enforcement & Border Wall Expansion

• Official Federal Register Entry: On July 20, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officially published its final rule rescinding the 2022 Biden-era public charge regulation.

Deadly Vehicle Enforcement and Policy Whiplash

• A Second Fatal Shooting: On Monday, July 13, ICE agents in Biddeford, Maine, fatally shot 26-year-old John Sebastian Guerrero inside his car. Mirroring the previous week’s fatal shooting in Houston, DHS acknowledged that Guerrero was not the intended target of the operational warrant.

• Florida Traffic Fatality: On Tuesday, July 14, a third migrant died in St. Augustine, Florida, after fleeing on foot during an ICE vehicle stop and being struck by a tractor-trailer.

• Houston Enforcement Escalation: On Tuesday, July 7, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican construction worker who had lived in the U.S. for over 30 years.

• The Fallout: Congressional Democrats and local officials are demanding independent investigations and the release of footage. The incident brought intense public scrutiny to ICE’s massive, largely unpublicized ongoing street-arrest blitz, which has seen daily arrests double across major cities.

The week of June 21–27, 2026, was marked by monumental U.S. Supreme Court rulings favoring the Trump administration’s strict immigration agenda, alongside major lower-court updates that reshaped deportation boundaries and detention practices across the nation.

Landmark Supreme Court Rulings:

The U.S. Supreme Court issued two highly consequential 6-3 decisions that significantly expanded the federal government’s authority to restrict asylum and deport temporary residents.

• Mullin v. Al Otro Lado (Asylum Metering): The Court ruled that migrants must physically cross into U.S. territory to claim asylum. This allows the government to systematically turn away or restrict asylum-seekers waiting at ports of entry on the Mexican side of the border.

• Mullin v. Doe (TPS Termination): The Court granted the administration full authority to cancel Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations. This decision clears the way to end deportation shields for over 350,000 eligible Haitian and Syrian immigrants living in the U.S.

• Blanche v. Muk Choi Lau (Green Card Re-entry): The Court also ruled 6-3 that border officials do not need “clear and convincing evidence” of a crime involving moral turpitude to deny re-entry to Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) returning from abroad; a reasonable belief is sufficient to defer inspection until after a conviction.

• Courthouse Arrest Ban: A federal judge in California ordered a nationwide halt on ICE’s practice of arresting migrants inside or directly outside of immigration courts, describing the tactical hallway arrests as “arbitrary and capricious”.

• Ebola Entry Ban Extended: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) extended its strict public health entry ban until July 21, 2026. This week’s US Border News Weekly Newsletter breaks down trends in US Immigration & Border Security enforcement, including continued sharp drops in migrant encounters, the current border hotspot for migrant arrests, and notable trends in border narcotics seizures.

Southwest Border Encounters & Apprehensions

• Historical Lows Maintained: Overall migration continues at a pace not seen in over three decades. For the most recent full tracking month, U.S. Border Patrol recorded just 9,998 total apprehensions along the southwest border.

  All Border Patrol Sectors there continue to report sharp drops in migrant encounters as shown in the chart below:

• Minor Seasonal Uptick: Despite the overarching historic lows, the monthly data reflects a minor 11% seasonal increase from the prior month.

  Southwest Border Patrol Sector-Specific Trends

• Rio Grande Valley Leads: For the fifth consecutive month, the Rio Grande Valley Sector in South Texas recorded the highest volume of migrant encounters and arrests nationwide.

• Shift to Single Adults: Across all sectors, family unit and child migration has plummeted, now making up only about 10% to 13% of total apprehensions. Single adults account for nearly 90% of those taken into CBP custody.

While the percentage of single adults apprehended by the CBP has risen (versus families and unaccompanied minors), the overall number of single adults apprehended has dropped sharply over the last three years, as shown in the chart below:

• Southern Border Prosecutions: In judicial enforcement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas continued its aggressive crackdown, announcing over 160 new criminal cases filed this week for unlawful reentry, alien smuggling, and assaulting federal border agents.

Contraband & Seizure Surges

• Significant Increase in Seizures: CBP has seized 56% more drugs this fiscal year through May than it seized during the same period of FY 2024. May 2026 seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana (combined, by weight) increased 32% from May 2024. This follows a large spike in seizures in April, which can be clearly seen in the chart below:

  

• Fentanyl Spike: CBP reported a sharp 72% increase in fentanyl seizures month-over-month, with federal agents intercepting 795 pounds last month alone.

• Overall Drug Seizures: Marijuana, Methamphetamine, and Cocaine remain the largest types of drugs seized. Worth noting: seizures of “Other Drugs” (which can include Prescription Drugs, Hallucinogens such as PCP and Mushrooms, as well as uncategorized “Designer” or Synthetic Drugs) are also sharply increasing, as shown in the chart below:

  

• Trade Enforcement Operations: In Houston, US Federal Officers seized a huge amount of counterfeit merchandise with FIFA trademark logos worth well over $6 million. In Miami, CBP officers seized over 16,000 counterfeit FIFA World Cup jerseys shipped from China, valued at over $1.2 million.

  The knock-offs were to be sold in US cities hosting World Cup games.

  

Southwest Border Drug Seizures

• Laredo and Eagle Pass, TX: Officers intercepted back-to-back smuggling attempts yielding nearly 74 pounds of cocaine (street value of $984,000) hidden in commercial and passenger vehicles.

• Progreso, TX: Officers on the Progreso-Nuevo Progreso International bridge seized 23 packages containing 51.85 lbs of cocaine concealed in the rear quarter panels of a vehicle crossing into Texas from Mexico.

• El Paso / Ysleta, TX: Agents utilizing canines and non-intrusive scanners recovered over 50 pounds of cocaine hidden in a vehicle trunk, and another bust yielded over 13 pounds of methamphetamine and 1.4 pounds of fentanyl powder.

Northern Border Drug Seizures

• Port Huron, MI: Near the Blue Water Bridge entering Canada, agents seized 133 pounds of shrink-wrapped cocaine bricks hidden in cardboard boxes within a big rig.

Military Operations

• Tren de Aragua Leader Killed: Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, better known by his alias “Niño Guerrero,” the founder and top leader of the transnational gang Tren de Aragua, was killed in a joint U.S.-Venezuelan military strike on June 12, 2026. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the "swift and lethal kinetic strike" targeted a Tren de Aragua compound located in Venezuela’s southeastern state of Bolívar.

• Smuggling Boat Attacks Questioned: A June 10, 2026, exposé by The Intercept revealed internal Pentagon concerns that the first fatal strike against a small smuggling boat on September 2, 2025, likely killed innocent human trafficking victims rather than cartel members. While typical drug smuggling pangas carry one to four smugglers, the targeted vessel carried 11 passengers.

Enforcement Operations

• Rapid Transfers: Investigative reports published during the week highlighted that the administration has increasingly utilized rapid 24-hour immigration detainee transfers. Tens of thousands of individuals are being moved directly into the federal judiciary’s 5th Circuit jurisdiction (Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi), where courts have favored strict mandatory detention policies.

• Field Interdictions: Local field operations continued to scale up under the newly active funding, yielding crackdowns by ICE alongside large drug interdictions by CBP officers at northern and southern ports of entry.

Legislative and Funding Action

• Secure America Act Signed: On June 10, 2026, President Trump officially signed the $70 billion Secure America Act into law. The bill narrowly cleared the House (214–212) following its narrow Senate approval.

• Funding Allocation: The enforcement package frontloads resources through the remainder of Trump’s term to sustain a target of 1 million deportations per year. It allocates $38 billion to ICE, $26 billion to CBP/Border Patrol, and $5 billion for Department of Homeland Security contingency funds.

• Sanctuary Penalties: A last-minute provision directs $350 million for ICE operations targeting states and cities deemed “non-cooperating” with federal immigration authorities. Concurrently, ICE leadership threatened unprecedented agent deployments in places like New York City following local non-cooperation laws.

• Asylum Halt Reversed: Following a stern scolding by a federal judge, Trump administration officials agreed to resume affirmative asylum application processing.

While U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agreed to comply, the Justice Department immediately appealed the order to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals on June 12.

During the week of May 31 to June 6, 2026, U.S. immigration and Border Security News included ongoing leadership changes at federal law enforcement agencies, a major legislative breakthrough in Congress, and a significant federal court ruling that rolled back a Trump administration policy.

New Leadership for US Border Patrol & Immigration & Customs Enforcement

• New Border Patrol Chief: As June began, US Border Patrol Agents found themselves under the command of a new permanent Border Patrol Chief for the first time since the previous Chief (Mike Banks) left the agency on May 14, 2026. President Trump named a 26-year veteran of the Border Patrol, Rosario “Pete” Vasquez, to that position.

• New ICE Acting Director: Also, David Venturella officially took over as acting director of US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), replacing Todd Lyons. Venturella previously served as a senior executive for the GEO Group, one of the nation’s largest private contractors operating immigration detention centers. Senator Elizabeth Warren sharply criticized his appointment, citing Venturella’s “decades-long trip in and out of the revolving door between ICE and the private prison industry.”

Senate Passes $70 Billion Immigration Enforcement Package

• Budget Reconciliation Breakthrough: In a narrow 52-47 vote early Friday morning, June 5, 2026, the U.S. Senate passed a massive $70 billion funding bill. Republicans used the budget reconciliation process to bypass the standard 60-vote threshold to pass the measure with a simple majority.

• Targeted Allocations: The bill directs $38.6 billion directly to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), $26 billion to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and $5 billion to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), locking in their budgets through the end of President Trump’s term.

• Controversial Provision Unaffected: Republicans rejected efforts to restrict or eliminate an attached $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” designed to compensate allies of President Trump who allege government mistreatment by federal prosecutors and law-enforcement agents.

Detainee Standoff and State Pushback

• New Jersey Standoff: On June 7, 2026, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill deployed the New Jersey State Police outside the Delaney Hall migrant detention center. The deployment followed clashes between protestors and federal officials who threatened to flood the area with armed tactical agents, escalating friction between federal enforcement priorities and local authorities.

Federal Judge Strikes Down Visa Restriction Policy

• Legal Rollback: On June 5, 2026, U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell Jr. struck down a highly restrictive Trump administration immigration policy that had placed nationals from 39 countries into legal limbo.

“Sanctuary City” Airport Penalties

• CBP Withdrawal Threats: Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin advanced formal plans to halt immigration and customs processing at major international airports located in sanctuary jurisdictions.

• Target Hubs: The plan targets high-traffic hubs including New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), Newark (EWR), Chicago (ORD), Seattle (SEA), and San Francisco (SFO).

• Industry Pushback: The U.S. Travel Association and airline industry leaders issued warnings that removing Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers would disrupt international air travel and commerce, inflicting devastating financial consequences on local economies.

Tightened Asylum Rules and Enforcement Vetting

• Asylum Filing Fees: On May 29, DHS and USCIS implemented new, stricter rules for Form I-589 asylum applications, introducing a recurring $102 annual fee for each year a case remains unresolved to account for inflation.

• Targeting Legal Infrastructure: On May 26, DHS directed ICE to aggressively pursue administrative fraud cases directly against immigration attorneys accused of submitting false asylum claims.

• Judicial Rulings: The U.S. Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration, upholding work-related speech restrictions placed on federal immigration judges.

Border Statistics and Operations

• Low Apprehensions: According to updates from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, Southwest Border apprehensions have hovered at their lowest levels in 55 years due to stricter enforcement and U.S.–Mexico coordination.

• Federal Prosecutions: Regional U.S. Attorney’s Offices heavily pushed criminal charges. In the District of Arizona alone, 331 individuals faced immigration-related criminal charges during the week for illegal entry, re-entry, and alien smuggling.
