The week of June 21–27, 2026, was marked by monumental U.S. Supreme Court rulings favoring the Trump administration’s strict immigration agenda, alongside major lower-court updates that reshaped deportation boundaries and detention practices across the nation.

Landmark Supreme Court Rulings:

The U.S. Supreme Court issued two highly consequential 6-3 decisions that significantly expanded the federal government’s authority to restrict asylum and deport temporary residents.

• Mullin v. Al Otro Lado (Asylum Metering): The Court ruled that migrants must physically cross into U.S. territory to claim asylum. This allows the government to systematically turn away or restrict asylum-seekers waiting at ports of entry on the Mexican side of the border.

• Mullin v. Doe (TPS Termination): The Court granted the administration full authority to cancel Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations. This decision clears the way to end deportation shields for over 350,000 eligible Haitian and Syrian immigrants living in the U.S.

• Blanche v. • Historical Lows Maintained: Overall migration continues at a pace not seen in over three decades. For the most recent full tracking month, U.S. Border Patrol recorded just 9,998 total apprehensions along the southwest border.

  All Border Patrol Sectors there continue to report sharp drops in migrant encounters as shown in the chart below:

• Minor Seasonal Uptick: Despite the overarching historic lows, the monthly data reflects a minor 11% seasonal increase from the prior month.

  Southwest Border Patrol Sector-Specific Trends

• Rio Grande Valley Leads: For the fifth consecutive month, the Rio Grande Valley Sector in South Texas recorded the highest volume of migrant encounters and arrests nationwide.

• Shift to Single Adults: Across all sectors, family unit and child migration has plummeted, now making up only about 10% to 13% of total apprehensions. Single adults account for nearly 90% of those taken into CBP custody.

While the percentage of single adults apprehended by the CBP has risen (versus families and unaccompanied minors), the overall number of single adults apprehended has dropped sharply over the last three years, as shown in the chart below:

• Southern Border Prosecutions: In judicial enforcement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas continued its aggressive crackdown, announcing over 160 new criminal cases filed this week for unlawful reentry, alien smuggling, and assaulting federal border agents.

Contraband & Seizure Surges

• Significant Increase in Seizures: CBP has seized 56% more drugs this fiscal year through May than it seized during the same period of FY 2024. May 2026 seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana (combined, by weight) increased 32% from May 2024. This follows a large spike in seizures in April, which can be clearly seen in the chart below:

  

• Fentanyl Spike: CBP reported a sharp 72% increase in fentanyl seizures month-over-month, with federal agents intercepting 795 pounds last month alone.

• Overall Drug Seizures: Marijuana, Methamphetamine, and Cocaine remain the largest types of drugs seized. Worth noting: seizures of “Other Drugs” (which can include Prescription Drugs, Hallucinogens such as PCP and Mushrooms, as well as uncategorized “Designer” or Synthetic Drugs) are also sharply increasing, as shown in the chart below:

  

• Trade Enforcement Operations: In Houston, US Federal Officers seized a huge amount of counterfeit merchandise with FIFA trademark logos worth well over $6 million. In Miami, CBP officers seized over 16,000 counterfeit FIFA World Cup jerseys shipped from China, valued at over $1.2 million.

  The knock-offs were to be sold in US cities hosting World Cup games.

  

Southwest Border Drug Seizures

• Laredo and Eagle Pass, TX: Officers intercepted back-to-back smuggling attempts yielding nearly 74 pounds of cocaine (street value of $984,000) hidden in commercial and passenger vehicles.

• Progreso, TX: Officers on the Progreso-Nuevo Progreso International bridge seized 23 packages containing 51.85 lbs of cocaine concealed in the rear quarter panels of a vehicle crossing into Texas from Mexico.

• El Paso / Ysleta, TX: Agents utilizing canines and non-intrusive scanners recovered over 50 pounds of cocaine hidden in a vehicle trunk, and another bust yielded over 13 pounds of methamphetamine and 1.4 pounds of fentanyl powder.

Northern Border Drug Seizures

• Port Huron, MI: Near the Blue Water Bridge entering Canada, agents seized 133 pounds of shrink-wrapped cocaine bricks hidden in cardboard boxes within a big rig.

Military Operations

• Tren de Aragua Leader Killed: Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, better known by his alias “Niño Guerrero,” the founder and top leader of the transnational gang Tren de Aragua, was killed in a joint U.S.-Venezuelan military strike on June 12, 2026. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the "swift and lethal kinetic strike" targeted a Tren de Aragua compound located in Venezuela’s southeastern state of Bolívar.

• Smuggling Boat Attacks Questioned: A June 10, 2026, exposé by The Intercept revealed internal Pentagon concerns that the first fatal strike against a small smuggling boat on September 2, 2025, likely killed innocent human trafficking victims rather than cartel members. While typical drug smuggling pangas carry one to four smugglers, the targeted vessel carried 11 passengers.

• Secure America Act Signed: On June 10, 2026, President Trump officially signed the $70 billion Secure America Act into law. The bill narrowly cleared the House (214–212) following its narrow Senate approval.

• Funding Allocation: The enforcement package frontloads resources through the remainder of Trump’s term to sustain a target of 1 million deportations per year. It allocates $38 billion to ICE, $26 billion to CBP/Border Patrol, and $5 billion for Department of Homeland Security contingency funds.

Concurrently, ICE leadership threatened unprecedented agent deployments in places like New York City following local non-cooperation laws.

During the week of May 31 to June 6, 2026, U.S. immigration and Border Security News included ongoing leadership changes at federal law enforcement agencies, a major legislative breakthrough in Congress, and a significant federal court ruling that rolled back a Trump administration policy.

New Leadership for US Border Patrol & Immigration & Customs Enforcement

• New Border Patrol Chief: As June began, US Border Patrol Agents found themselves under the command of a new permanent Border Patrol Chief for the first time since the previous Chief (Mike Banks) left the agency on May 14, 2026. President Trump named a 26-year veteran of the Border Patrol, Rosario “Pete” Vasquez, to that position.

• New ICE Acting Director: Also, David Venturella officially took over as acting director of US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), replacing Todd Lyons. Venturella previously served as a senior executive for the GEO Group, one of the nation’s largest private contractors operating immigration detention centers. Senator Elizabeth Warren sharply criticized his appointment, citing Venturella’s “decades-long trip in and out of the revolving door between ICE and the private prison industry.”

Senate Passes $70 Billion Immigration Enforcement Package

• Budget Reconciliation Breakthrough: In a narrow 52-47 vote early Friday morning, June 5, 2026, the U.S. Senate passed a massive $70 billion funding bill. Republicans used the budget reconciliation process to bypass the standard 60-vote threshold to pass the measure with a simple majority.

• Targeted Allocations: The bill directs $38.6 billion directly to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), $26 billion to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and $5 billion to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), locking in their budgets through the end of President Trump’s term.

• Controversial Provision Unaffected: Republicans rejected efforts to restrict or eliminate an attached $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” designed to compensate allies of President Trump who allege government mistreatment by federal prosecutors and law-enforcement agents.

• 40 pounds of cocaine seized at the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint

Investigation Into Cartel Ties to Mexican Government Underway

Following our story late last month about the U.S. indictments of the Governor of the Mexican State of SInaloa and nine other current and former Mexican officials on drug trafficking and weapons charges for their alleged involvement with the Sinaloa Cartel, comes news this week of reaction from Mexican authorities:

• The elected Governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, announced he has been summoned for questioning by the Mexican Attorney General.

• The Mexican Attorney General’s Office confirmed that and announced the nine others indicted by the US have also been summoned for questioning.

On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, US Border News reported that Mexican authorities narrowly prevented a mass-casualty incident involving migrants from Central and South America being smuggled to the US Border from occurring earlier in the week. 229 migrants from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Ecuador were discovered locked in the trailer of a stolen semi-truck in Xelapa, Veracruz. Some had to be treated by EMS personnel for dehydration.

During the week of March 15–21, 2026, U.S. border security and immigration news was dominated by the continued partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over Democratic challenges to the Trump administration’s aggressive enforcement posture.

• Legislative Gridlock: Although the White House offered Democrats a counterproposal to change DHS during a bipartisan meeting on Friday, Democrats remain firm in calling for an end to masked federal agents enforcing immigration law and for requiring the use of judicial rather than administrative warrants. Republicans are expected to continue rejecting Democratic offers to fund the Transportation Security Administration during the impasse.

• No Easter Break for Lawmakers?: Senate Majority Leader John Thune is threatening to nix the chamber's two-week Easter recess unless a deal is reached.

• Mandatory Detention Challenged: A divided 5th Circuit Court of Appeals panel upheld the administration’s policy of placing immigrants in mandatory detention without bond hearings, despite lower courts ruling the policy unlawful. The ACLU challenged this policy before the 6th Circuit on March 16, 2026.

• Third-Country Deportation Policy Reinstated: A 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel on March 16, 2026, lifted a lower court’s order that had paused the administration’s policy, allowing for the immediate deportation of migrants to safe third countries, rather than their home countries.

• Supreme Court Review of TPS: On March 16, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court is also considering the administration’s ability to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from Haiti and Syria.

• What Mass Deportations?: Politico reports that the “Trump administration quietly shifted its immigration messaging in the weeks after its violent operation in Minneapolis that included the fatal shooting of two Americans, largely dropping mentions of “mass deportations” as public sentiment shifted against the aggressive tactics.” Politico’s “review of social media posts from major official administration accounts shows only one mention of the term in the past month, compared to more than a dozen in the four weeks prior.”

• Declining Data Transparency: Reports on March 15 highlighted that key enforcement metrics from the Office of Homeland Security Statistics have not been updated for over a year, making it difficult for researchers to track the administration’s goal of 1 million deportations.

• Enforcement Operations: ICE reported several high-profile arrests of noncitizens with prior criminal charges, including cases involving assault on veterans and violent offenses against minors, as part of its “Making America Safe Again” initiative.

• Border Task Force Milestone: The US Military’s “Joint Task Force-Southern Border” marked its one-year anniversary on March 14, 2026. More than 20,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and National Guardsmen have worked alongside US Border Patrol Agents on patrols and installing barriers along the border with Mexico

“Injury Time-Out” Update:

Regular readers of US Border News know that I broke several bones in my right hand and badly bruised several ribs during a fall at the end of January, which has made writing difficult (to put it mildly).

On Friday, my orthopedist finally removed the cast and referred me to a physical therapist to help me regain the use of my hand.

I had hoped that this would free me to resume writing as I had before, but I quickly found out that the pain from breaking my hand was even greater once the cast was removed. I am also experiencing more restrictions on using my hand after the cast removal (which I did not anticipate).

The week of March 1–7, 2026, was marked by a major leadership transition at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a continuing partial government shutdown, and a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Leadership Transition

• DHS Secretary Kristi Noem Steps Down: Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s controversial tenure came to an abrupt end on March 5, 2026, just after some combative hearing appearances before Congress. President Trump announced that Noem would transition from DHS Secretary to a new role as Special Envoy for “The Shield of the Americas”.

• New DHS Nominee: The President named Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) as the next Homeland Security Secretary, effective March 31, 2026, pending Senate confirmation.

• Partial Shutdown Continues: A partial government shutdown continued due to a funding lapse triggered by disagreements over ICE reforms. While the vast majority of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations can tap previously authorized funds, many other DHS employees (including TSA and FEMA workers) continue working without pay.

• Supreme Court Ruling: On March 4, the Supreme Court ruled in Urias-Orellana v. Bondi, narrowing the ability of appellate courts to overturn asylum denials by requiring a more deferential standard of review

• Judicial Oversight: On March 6, 2026, a federal judge blocked DHS for the third time from restricting unplanned congressional visits to ICE detention facilities.

• Minnesota Investigation: On March 2, 2026, Minnesota authorities launched an investigation into potential federal officer misconduct during recent large-scale immigration crackdowns in the Minneapolis area.

• Border Wall Expansion Controversy: CBP maps updated after Noem’s departure suggest that the agency may be backing away from its insistence on Border Walls in Big Bend National Park, a wilderness area that sits in the quietest, least-populated part of the entire U.S.-Mexico border. • ICE detention expansion & in-custody deaths: the sprawling tent encampment at Fort Bliss, Texas, may be slated to close after three deaths and a measles outbreak. Alarming reports continue to emerge about conditions in the Dilley, Texas Family Detention Center. Opposition is growing to an ICE plan, unconsulted with host communities, to establish a $38 billion network of “warehouse” detention centers.

Visa & Legal Immigration Updates

• Visa Bulletin Advancements: The March 2026 Visa Bulletin showed significant progress in employment-based categories, including an 11-month jump for EB-2 and a 4-month jump for EB-1.

• Premium Processing Fee Hike: Effective March 1, 2026, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) implemented a final rule increasing premium processing fees, with some rising to nearly $3,000.

• Notes from Mexico: New reports on conditions in Mexico include a Refugees International investigation of the U.S. government’s third-country deportations, a University of Texas Strauss Center report on conditions in Mexican border cities, and a report from the El Paso-based Hope Border Institute and several Mexican migrant shelters and human rights defenders, found a much higher proportion of deported people who had been living in the U.S. interior for some time vs past deportee groups arriving in Mexico.

The week of February 22–28, 2026, was an eventful one, led by the US Attack on Iran, which has security implications, including:

• GOP calls for Democrats to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):

GOP leaders called on Democrats to fully fund the DHS to ensure its ability to protect the security of America’s homeland amid Iran’s pledge to strike back.

“Given developments in the Middle East and the ongoing threat posed by Iran and its terrorist proxies, Democrats in the House and Senate must cease the politics and must immediately fund the Department of Homeland Security,” said Rep. Daniel Meuser, R-Pa.

• A mass shooting in Austin, possibly in retaliation for the attack on Iran:

The gunman who killed two people on a busy Austin street early Sunday in a mass shooting that left 14 others wounded was wearing a sweatshirt that said “Property of Allah,” and another shirt with an Iranian flag design, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The shooter has been identified as a 53-year-old from Senegal who came to the US in 2006 (when George W. Bush was President) and had since become a naturalized US citizen. Austin Police officers shot and killed him.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott vowed that “Texas will respond with decisive and overwhelming force to protect our state.” Earlier in the week, he surged law enforcement to the Texas Border in response to cartel violence in Mexico.

Here’s what you need to know about the DHS funding battle:

The Department of Homeland Security entered its 16th day of a partial shutdown on March 1, 2026, after the Senate failed to pass a funding bill.

• The Impasse: Senate Democrats blocked a $45 billion funding proposal, demanding oversight reforms for ICE and CBP following fatal shootings by federal agents in Minnesota.

• Emergency Measures: DHS suspended Global Entry arrivals and non-disaster FEMA responses on February 22 to conserve funds.

• Workforce Pay: CBP is utilizing funds from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to continue paying approximately 57,600 “essential” employees during the lapse.

Other substantial events of the week include:

1. State of the Union (February 24-25)

President Trump centered his address on border security, declaring the border “secure” and touting a nine-month streak of zero migrant releases.

• Confrontations: Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib interrupted the speech to protest enforcement tactics, with Omar shouting, “You have killed Americans”.

• Data Scrutiny: A February 28 analysis by the Minnesota Star Tribune found that many individuals ICE claimed to have “taken off the streets” were already in local custody at the time of their arrest.

The week ending February 15, 2026, was dominated by a partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and a high-profile drawdown of federal enforcement surges in the Midwest.

1. DHS Partial Government Shutdown

A partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security began at midnight on Saturday, February 14, after Congress failed to reach a funding agreement.

• The Impasse: Senate Democrats blocked a full-year funding bill, demanding new oversight guardrails and restrictions on ICE and Border Patrol operations.

• The Catalyst: Democratic demands followed the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, by federal agents during an enforcement surge in Minneapolis last month.

• Impacted Agencies: Funding has lapsed for the TSA, FEMA, the U.S. Coast Guard, Secret Service, ICE, and CBP. However, many core border operations remain funded through the “Big Beautiful Bill Act” signed in 2025.

• Current Status: Lawmakers left Washington for the President’s Day recess without a resolution, meaning the shutdown is expected to last at least until they return on February 23.

2. Minneapolis Enforcement Drawdown

White House border czar Tom Homan announced the end of the “Operation Metro Surge” in Minnesota’s Twin Cities.

• Personnel Withdrawal: More than 1,000 agents have already left the area, with hundreds more scheduled to depart in the coming days.

• Residual Force: Homan stated a “small security force” will remain to protect agents from “agitators” and to continue investigations into widespread Medicaid and marriage fraud.

• Enforcement Totals: Officials reported that over 10,000 individuals were removed during the surge, which has faced intense local protest and national scrutiny following the recent deaths.

3. Border Security & Immigration Statistics

The administration highlighted continued declines in illegal border activity.

• Low Encounters: Preliminary January data show U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehended 42% fewer illegal aliens per day at the southern border than in a single hour during the height of the previous administration.

• Zero Releases: U.S. Border Patrol marked its ninth consecutive month of “zero releases,” claiming every apprehended individual was processed and detained according to law.

• Arrest Data: A newly released internal DHS document revealed that only 14% of immigrants arrested by ICE in the past year had convictions or charges for violent crimes, challenging the administration’s “worst of the worst” rhetoric.

Late last month, I declared an “injury time-out” after a fall during a winter ice storm resulted in severely bruised ribs and several broken bones in my right hand (which has made it difficult for me to produce new US Border News articles).

Since then, my ribs have healed, and the reduced swelling in my hand has allowed me to progress from a “soft cast” to a “hard cast,” which should allow me to write more. We’ll see.
