Regular readers of US Border News know that I broke several bones in my right hand and badly bruised several ribs during a fall at the end of January, which has made writing difficult (to put it mildly).

On Friday, my orthopedist finally removed the cast and referred me to a physical therapist to help me regain the use of my hand.

I had hoped that this would free me to resume writing as I had before, but I quickly found out that the pain from breaking my hand was even greater once the cast was removed. I am also experiencing more restrictions on using my hand after the cast removal (which I did not anticipate).

GOP leaders called on Democrats to fully fund the DHS to ensure its ability to protect the security of America’s homeland amid Iran’s pledge to strike back.

“Given developments in the Middle East and the ongoing threat posed by Iran and its terrorist proxies, Democrats in the House and Senate must cease the politics and must immediately fund the Department of Homeland Security,” said Rep. Daniel Meuser, R-Pa.

• A mass shooting in Austin, possibly in retaliation for the attack on Iran:

The gunman who killed two people on a busy Austin street early Sunday in a mass shooting that left 14 others wounded was wearing a sweatshirt that said “Property of Allah,” and another shirt with an Iranian flag design, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The shooter has been identified as a 53-year-old from Senegal who came to the US in 2006 (when George W. Bush was President) and had since become a naturalized US citizen. Austin Police officers shot and killed him.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott vowed that “Texas will respond with decisive and overwhelming force to protect our state.” Earlier in the week, he surged law enforcement to the Texas Border in response to cartel violence in Mexico.

Here’s what you need to know about the DHS funding battle:

The Department of Homeland Security entered its 16th day of a partial shutdown on March 1, 2026, after the Senate failed to pass a funding bill.

• The Impasse: Senate Democrats blocked a $45 billion funding proposal, demanding oversight reforms for ICE and CBP following fatal shootings by federal agents in Minnesota.

• Emergency Measures: DHS suspended Global Entry arrivals and non-disaster FEMA responses on February 22 to conserve funds.

• Workforce Pay: CBP is utilizing funds from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to continue paying approximately 57,600 “essential” employees during the lapse.

When the website “L.A. TACO” requested a comment from the Department of Homeland Security, they say they received the following two-word response from Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs: “Happy Halloween!”

• Mass Removals Continue

  DHS announced that over 527,000 illegal aliens have been removed under the current administration. “DHS, ICE, and CBP have not just closed the border, but made historic strides to carry out President Trump’s promise of arresting and deporting illegal aliens who have invaded our country,” a DHS Spokesperson said.

• Refugee Admissions Cap Slashed

  In a major policy shift, the Trump administration announced it will cap refugee admissions at a historic low of 7,500 for the current fiscal year, down from 125,000 under the previous administration. The new plan reportedly prioritizes white South Africans, a move that has drawn criticism from Congressional Democrats.

• Court Challenges Continue

  
  Legal battles over DHS arrests continued, as an appeals court temporarily halted a judge’s order for a Border Patrol commander to make daily court appearances related to agency tactics in Chicago.

• Changes to Employment Authorization and Payments

  The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) introduced an interim final rule ending automatic extensions of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for certain aliens with pending renewal applications. Additionally, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) now requires all paper-filed forms to use electronic payments.

This week’s news on U.S. border security and immigration includes a continued sharp drop in illegal crossings; the announcement of Operation River Wall to bolster border security, and the expansion of facial recognition technology to track non-citizens entering & leaving the US.

Border security and law enforcement

• Illegal crossings down 93% under Trump vs Biden Administrations:

  The Trump Administration reports a fifth straight months of zero releases at the border as well as a 93% drop in illegal border crossings from the peak during the Biden administration.

• Operation River Wall: Homeland Security Secretary Noem announced a new operation, “Operation River Wall,” aimed at strengthening border security against illegal immigration. (Read our story about that HERE)

• Facial recognition expansion: The U.S. will increase its use of facial recognition technology at its borders to track non-citizens, combat visa overstays, and prevent passport fraud

• Drug smuggling: The Department of Homeland Security reports that on a typical day, it seizes 1,797 pounds of illegal narcotics, which criminal organizations primarily traffic through ports of entry.

Criminal prosecutions

• Guilty pleas: A criminal illegal alien and suspected member of the Tren de Aragua gang who was living with a New Mexico judge pleaded guilty to illegally possessing firearms and destroying evidence, reports The Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

• Tibetan man sentenced: A Tibetan man was sentenced to 27 months in prison for filing fraudulent asylum claims for profit, says U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services( USCIS).

Immigration policy change

• New Asylum Fees: USCIS began notifying individuals with pending asylum applications that they are required to pay a new $100 annual fee. The notice, sent on October 17, informed applicants that failure to pay within 30 days could negatively affect their case

This week’s U.S. immigration and border security news includes another arrest for threats against federal agents, federal crackdowns in Chicago and Los Angeles, contract awards for new border wall construction, and new visa policies.

Death Threats & Detainee Deaths

• Death threats against Feds Continue: DHS announced the arrest of an illegal alien in Dallas who had allegedly offered $10,000 on TikTok for the murder of ICE agents. His arrest follows that of another illegal alien in Chicago the week before, for allegedly offering a similar bounty for the killing of a Border Patrol officer there.

• Targeted enforcement operations: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been conducting widespread enforcement actions.

  • Illinois: Under “Operation Midway Blitz,” more than 1,500 people have been arrested in the state since the operation began. A federal judge questioned DHS’s credibility in these operations and is now requiring agents with body cameras to use them during encounters with protesters.

  • Massachusetts: Operation Patriot 2.0 resulted in more than 1,400 arrests.

• ICE detainee deaths: The American Immigration Council reports that 2025 has been the deadliest year for ICE detainees since 2004, with 25 deaths this fiscal year. Reasons cited include overcrowding, medical neglect, and mental distress.

Southern Border Security

• Border wall construction: DHS has awarded $4.5 billion in contracts to build roughly 230 miles of new land and aquatic barriers. Construction is being expedited through the waiver of multiple laws, including environmental protections.

• Drug smuggling: DHS officials reported significant drug seizures, including fentanyl, in the past week as part of continued counter-smuggling efforts. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized over $738,000 in cocaine at the Hidalgo Port of Entry.

Legal and Administrative Updates

• Work permit ruling upheld: The Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal challenging work permits for H-1B visa spouses, leaving a previous lower-court ruling in place.

• New parole fee: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) implemented a new $1,000 fee, effective October 16, for individuals paroled or re-paroled into the U.S.. Mandated by the H.R. 1 Reconciliation Bill, the fee is intended to deter fraud and abuse of the parole system.

• H-1B visa lawsuit: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce filed a lawsuit against the administration over a new $100,000 H-1B visa fee.
